As negotiations over the budget continue to stumble to an impasse, the public holds its breath for the inevitable. Most have an imperfect recollection of the Newt Gingrich shutdown in the nineties (myself included) and are unsure of how bad it will be.
It will be very bad. During the Newt-engineered shutdown, the economy was in excellent shape and while the shutdown hurt a lot of people it didn’t cripple the country. That will not be the case this time. We are still struggling back to our feet and a government shutdown will cut off a huge and vital flow of money into the economy.
This cutoff will impact Social Security, Veteran’s benefits and a number of other payouts that will be put on hold. It will hurt the government employees that will be furloughed, depriving them of a paycheck. Contrary to what you may have heard, most of these workers cannot afford to miss a paycheck or two just like everyone else. At the same time, a furlough will devastate the hundreds of thousands of local businesses that cater to the governments’ needs, be it food services, office supplies, transportation and the like.
A short GOP shutdown will be excruciating. A prolonged one stands a excellent chance of pushing us back into a full recession. The GOP knows this and their response?
“House Republicans huddled late Monday and, according to a GOP aide, gave the speaker an ovation when he informed them that he was advising the House Administration Committee to begin preparing for a possible shutdown.”
They applauded! APPLAUDED! Because ideology ALWAYS trumps the public good with the GOP. Remember this when a Republican gets in front of a microphone and laments about how hard they tried and how it’s all the Democrats fault for not giving them
everything they wanted compromising. They applauded. The GOP WANTS the shutdown and they’re going to get it because they think it will help them. I hope America is smarter than that and I hope there’s a video of the House GOP showing their true colors.
