Gov. Rick Perry: God Crashed Economy, To Return Us To Biblical Principles

June 14, 2011
By

Texas Governor Rick Perry

In an interview last month, Texas Governor Rick Perry explained how the economic crisis is part of God’s plan, to return us to biblical principles. Gov. Perry has expressed some interest in running for President in 2012, and polled voters nationwide in January to see how he would do.

Governor Perry has taken criticism recently for his budget which would lay off 100,000 teachers, as well as the fact that he invited other Governors to an anti-gay prayer event.

In 2009 Gov. Perry publicly refused stimulus money, then secretly used stimulus money to balance his budget.

In April of this year, when Texas was facing massive wildfires, he publicly criticized the Obama Administration for not helping his state, even though he was receiving federal funding to help fight the fires.

Via Think Progress;

During an appearance on James Robison’s Life Today television program, Perry says he sees a silver lining to the devastating recession that has cost millions of families their jobs, homes, and livelihoods: it will return America to “Biblical principles” and free us from the slavery of big government:

PERRY: I think in America from time to time we have to go through some difficult times — and I think we’re going through those difficult economic times for a purpose, to bring us back to those Biblical principles of you know, you don’t spend all the money. You work hard for those six years and you put up that seventh year in the warehouse to take you through the hard times. And not spending all of our money. Not asking for Pharaoh to give everything to everybody and to take care of folks because at the end of the day, it’s slavery. We become slaves to government.

Herman Cain for President….only makes sense

  2. Reda Cavender on August 20, 2011 at 4:12 PM

Rick Perry, don’t you think God has got better things to worry about than the shi**y way our politicians are handling our money. Leave God alone to worry about what’s important. And if you want to pray over something really important, pray over the people in Lybia, Iran, Afghanistan, London, and anywhere else people are trying to kill each other.

Hey, I”M from Texas. We don’t deserve him but we’ve been stuck with him for years. Oh, yeah. I don’t live there anymore. I ran away to Ecuador.

  4. Terry on August 20, 2011 at 11:29 AM

The veneer is stripped off of the intellectual soundness of the biblical values crowd’s claims when they cite stories that are not about taxation and gov’t control, except that they are mentioned, and even those portions recommend the exact opposite approach. The story of Joseph is primarily about the nature of family. The only reason that the Egyptians survive the famine is Joseph’s recommendation to pharaoh that he tax them and set a portion of grain aside.

    • Reda Cavender on August 20, 2011 at 4:14 PM

Now vickie, you’re just being silly now.

  5. R. Joshua on August 20, 2011 at 6:03 AM

What happened to the separation of church and state? Can we please run the country in a politically balanced way and leave the unnecessary religious digs at the door?

  6. Brett on August 19, 2011 at 9:15 PM

no matter what you think of the guy look at the economy in Texas?

    • Ronbo on August 20, 2011 at 1:28 AM

Okay, I’ll look at the Texas economy. Let’s see, ranked 24th in employment, middle of the pack. The growth in raw numbers of jobs has been due to growth in population. Very low average wage, most private sector jobs have been minimum wage. Solved the deficit with billions of dollars in accounting tricks that will hurt in future years – things like estimating zero growth in the number of school children, even as people are moving there, and shifting payments forward to the next fiscal year. Ranks near last in education, and laying off 100,000 teachers this year. Benefits from huge government spending, including huge military bases, and billions in federal stimulus.

Unemployment is lower in New York and Massachusetts.

      • Dennis on August 20, 2011 at 7:22 AM

Might want to fact check a little more. 49% of jobs created in from 08-10 were in Texas. They are leading the nation in the creation of new jobs.

        • Matthew Desmond on August 20, 2011 at 9:10 AM

Yes, but they’re all minimum wage jobs. That’s why Texas has one of the highest poverty levels in the country. If you want to spend the rest of your life working a minimum wage job, by all means, move to Texas.

          • Dennis on August 20, 2011 at 9:26 AM

Better jobs of any kind with near 20% real unemployment, 50% in many inner cities. Sorry the get rich quick jobs are not coming along as fast as you might like.

            • Floyd Miller on August 20, 2011 at 5:39 PM

We are talking about jobs for educated people. IT jobs, writing jobs, etc. The Chinese tried moving engineers and other professionals into manual labor back in the 1960s. It was called Mao’s Cultural Revolution. You teabaggers want to revive that in this country. Now, I realize you and your GED can only handle a minimum wage job…

              • chad on August 21, 2011 at 5:59 AM

don’t be so quick to put all tea party members on the same issues… Ron Paul started the Tea Party movement and once it gained traction, we’ve seen plenty of these puppets hoping to squeeze a few votes out of the tea party supporters with their lip service. Perry is the last thing this country needs. Ron Paul is the only GOP candidate that represents what the original tea party movement was all about and anyone who thinks otherwise is not a tea party candidate/supporter. I happen to be one of many active duty RP supporters who gladly signs a portion of my federal earnings to his campaign as I can to ensure idiots like Perry, Romney, Santorum and Bachmann go back to where they came from.

  8. Robin on August 19, 2011 at 6:44 PM

  9. Dana Kincaid on August 19, 2011 at 5:08 PM

Perry isn’t going to get the nomination. He’s just entertainment for the news channels.

Everyone is already sick of Mister Texas Big-Hair. Give us another month and some crazed and maddened individual will punch him right in the face.

  10. Dana Kincaid on August 19, 2011 at 5:05 PM

“Big Bad W had us at <5% unemployment"…

Yes, Herr ShrubCheny wanted us to shop, as if that would pay for the wars that those gods-damm-ed morons started.

The housing crisis and Wall Street disaster happened because Shrub decided that regulation was bad. 911 happened because Herr Shrub was too stupid to listen to people who told him that bin Laden was a threat.

    • Roger on August 20, 2011 at 8:02 AM

Hate to let you know Big Bad W 7.5 unemployment. And on the rise.

  11. Lawless1 on August 19, 2011 at 4:10 PM

Hey Perry…did God tell you to buy stock in that porn company too??

  12. Jennifer Pekrul on August 19, 2011 at 2:09 PM

Wait what? Pharaoh did give everything. There was a famine coming so Joseph told the pharaoh to put a curtain amount away from each harvest, so during the famine pharaoh could give to his starving people free of charge, the only people who had to pay were foreigners.

This man knows NOTHING of Biblical principles.

  13. hazel on August 19, 2011 at 2:08 PM

I love the way we blame god and shrug the responsibility, I am sure that humans crashed the economy with our constant need for more. I think God is just entertained by the way we choose to use our free will.

  14. Paul on August 19, 2011 at 1:44 PM

    LOL

Reading comprehension around here is horrible. He isn’t blaming God. He is just using an example that the bulk of people in this country (because most people in this country are Christian) would understand – the idea of not living beyond your means. He wants some fiscal responsibility in the government. Federal gov has been living beyond its means for decades and it’s time for that to stop.

Instead of understanding that’s what he meant, you all just see an R next to his name, mention of the Bible, and freak out. It’s sad, really.

Oh, and when he mentions Pharaoh – he means the GOVERNMENT. Stop asking the GOVERNMENT to solve all your problems. The level of conceptualization ability around here is a bit low.

    • Carol on August 19, 2011 at 2:49 PM

Pharoh was government. Goverment put things aside and then was able to solve the problems.

      • martois on August 19, 2011 at 6:30 PM

        thank you for actually reading

    • Dana Kincaid on August 19, 2011 at 5:02 PM

We aren’t asking the government to solve all our problems, Mister Paul. We ARE asking Teathuglicans and Reich-Wing Texans to leave us alone or stop causing problems that they are too bloody stupid to solve, or even comprehend.

I am buying a house with a homea loan, and a car with an auto loan. This does not mean that I am living beyon my means. I have a job, therefore I intend to pay these loans with expected future income. The U.S. government used to have expected future income that would cover the debts they incurred. Then came the Bush tax cuts gave away most of that future income to people who did not need the handout. So in effect Rick Perry just called George W. Bush – God.

      • Dennis on August 20, 2011 at 1:36 PM

This is so myopic and wrong I don’t know where to even begin.

    • Todd Bollack on August 21, 2011 at 2:39 PM

Pharaoh handing out freebies to the destitute? Stinks of socialism.

Who invented this concept that our government can’t hold a debt? We’ve had a debt as long as I’ve been alive.

You buy your house & car with cash? No credit cards? GTFOOH with that teabag wisdom. It sounds nice but it’s completely ridiculous and has no bearing in reality. Idololgy, at its worst: bullsh!t sold as God’s will. Yuck.

  15. Randi Grogan on August 19, 2011 at 12:47 PM

I’m so tired of religion being brought into politics. I’m atheist and very happy. For those who think there is an invisible man who wants us to follow the 10 commandments, you need to be committed. Then on Sunday people go to church and pray, isn’t Sunday his day off? Rick Perry and the like can preach whatever they want but they won’t get my vote. I’ll happily vote for Obama again because W messed up our Country big time.

    • Paul on August 19, 2011 at 1:45 PM

      LOL wow

Big Bad W had us at <5% unemployment, solid GDP growth, record tax revenue, and a falling deficit. TEH HORROR!

Obama is an abject failure, as are the Democrats in Congress. Do you even realize they didn't propose a single budget (their PRIMARY ROLE in the federal government) in over two years?

      • Carol on August 19, 2011 at 2:46 PM

Sure, Bush had that…when he took over from Clinton. Then he squandered it.

Amazing how people forget that the economy tanked BEFORE Obama came into office.

        Sigh.

      • Kevin on August 19, 2011 at 2:52 PM

What kind of drugs are you on? “A falling deficit”?? He inherited a surplus, then proceeded to generate a deficit via tax cuts, unfunded medicare part d and two wars. Get a grip…

      • louis on August 19, 2011 at 3:00 PM

Well, aren’t you the cutest little shill! When Bush left office, we were losing 1 million jobs a month. the deficit was at 11 trillion dollars. His wars were illegal and unjustified. He attacked our constitutional rights with the patriots act. His admin oversaw crimes of torture at GITMO. The economy was pure shit from 2004 on up. The housing market crashed. He bailed out the banksters. His tax cuts didnt work. Record revenue? Thats a total lie.

He expanded our unfair trade policies, and oversaw the further dismantling and destruction of our manufacturing base. His admins incompetence allowed 9-11 to happen. His admin committed treason by outing a CIA agent. Seriously? please. how do you sleep at night? Oh, yea…on a bed of lies.

          BUSH, The Truth
January 3rd, 2007 was the day the Democrats took over the Senate and the Congress:
          At the time:
          1. The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77
          2. The GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5%
          3. The Unemployment rate was 4.6%
          4. George Bush’s Economic policies SET A RECORD of 52 STRAIGHT MONTHS of JOB CREATION!
          Remember the day…
          1. January 3rd, 2007 was the day that Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee.
          2. The economic meltdown that happened 15 months later was in what part of the economy?
          BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES!
          3. Thank Congress for taking us from 13,000 DOW, 3.5 GDP and 4.6% Unemployment to this CRISIS by dumping 5-6 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from YOUR Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac fiasco’s!
(BTW: Bush asked Congress 17 TIMES to stop Fannie & Freddie – starting in 2001, because it was financially risky for the U.S. economy, but no one was listening).
And who took the THIRD highest pay-off from Fannie Mae AND Freddie Mac?
          OBAMA
And who fought against reform of Fannie and Freddie??
          OBAMA and the Democratic Congress
So when someone tries to blame Bush…
REMEMBER JANUARY 3rd, 2007…. THE DAY THE DEMOCRATS TOOK OVER!
” Bush may have been in the car, but the Democrats were in charge of the gas pedal and steering wheel they were driving. Set the record straight on Bush!

      • Gphill on August 20, 2011 at 3:16 AM

Are you serious? People are calling Obama a failure because he’s looking out for middle class citizens in the u.s. and trying to clean up an eight year screw up by the second coming of the bush tax cuts to the wealthy. Riddle me this, if the middle class gets taxed into oblivion, creating only upper and lower classes, who is going to carry the tax burden then? Lower class will have just enuf to die with, so who is gonna pay the bill then? Upper class….and they are gonna get hit HARD!!! Common darn sense….tea-party don’t seem to see the full tapestry. They want cutting and smaller government at the expense of children and the elderly…2012 may not be a bad year for the world to end…. ;P

        • Dennis on August 20, 2011 at 9:29 AM

Riddle me this. How is increasing our debt to the highest it has been in history, printing money like we are a banana republic, thus raising inflation, thus taking more from the poor, helping the middle class? When it came time to help the American people, Bush wrote a check to the American public. Obama wrote a check to big corporations. Is that irony?

Don’t think for a minute that Perry cares anything for education. He is gutting the public school system. And then he refuses to speak at education organizations, probably because he’s afraid of them.

  19. Jon Bon Jovi on June 19, 2011 at 6:26 PM

So wait, God’s plan is to screw thousands of people (millions if you want to go national) to help support a handful who didn’t need the help in the first place?

    God’s such a douche.

  20. Daniel Alicea on June 18, 2011 at 7:30 PM

I fear these theocrats more than their apocalyptic rhetoric about looming Sharia law.

What’s hilarious is that he has the Pharaoh/Joseph story twisted … saying we must not go to Pharaoh, which is the gov’t, during the lean years. Politics aside, fact is, Pharaoh listened to God’s word through Joseph after interpreting his dream … and even Joseph’s dad and brothers came to Egypt asking the monarchy for help as the famine heightened.

    Goofball alert.

    • born on August 6, 2011 at 6:08 PM

Mr. Perry is a Republican. Let’s get that straight.

      • dj on August 19, 2011 at 1:28 PM

Don’t forget, Rick Perry is also a big-time HYPOCRITE, but then, most Republicans are anyway…against Big Government but hey we need some government money down here. Hey we need some government help with our drought.Hey, we need the government to build a wall on the Texas-Mexico border to keep “them” out. Hey, we need jobs…oh wait, I can steal them from our neighboring states…”My terrific plan for the nation”. Hey, I’m sponsoring this neat “christian” get-together for all those southern bigots who masqurade as christians, you know, them whats against poor people, sick people, people who are different, etc…you know, all those things Jesus was against??? Stay in Texas Ricky..they deserve you!!!

REMEMBER: In a government, OF, BY and FOR the People…. GOVERNMENT IS WHERE WE DO THE PEOPLE’S BUSINESS.

SMALLER GOVERNMENT IS nothing more than a CORPORATE FREE-FOR-ALL… no police or courts to PUNISH CORPORATIONS FOR THEIR CRIMES… NO REGULATIONS, NO OVERSIGHT, NOTHING…

Ever try to get a court day NOW … just for a divorce? And those without money languish in JAILS every day, for minor offenses, because they can’t afford an attorney or BAIL. This is our non-justice system of the PRISON INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX for PROFIT… (and based on WINNING, rather than TRUTH)

  31. Christopher B. Stewart on June 15, 2011 at 6:10 AM

I guess he doesn’t mean these particular “biblical principles” — that would be too Marxist for his clique:

And all that believed were together, and had all things common (Acts 2:44)

And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any [of them] that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. (Acts 4:32)

Acts 5:1But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, 2And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? 4Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. 5And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. 6And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. 7And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. 8And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. 9Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. 10Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

The GOP will stoop to ANY level to gain power and control. Xian assholes like this are so dangerously misguided, they need to be classified as terrorists, which is what they are – Xian fear-mongers with no understanding of morals, ethics or right and wrong.

They blame Obama for the mess they created, then yell louder when confronted with facts. But this is RELIGIOUS, so there are NO facts, only 2000-year-old multiply-rewritten (yet somehow always totally true) dogma and prophecy.

The ignorance is appalling, the arrogance is expected, but more dangerous is the mean-spiritedness of the Xian “community,” especially among Texas right-wingers. This is the kill-or-be-killed state, highest execution rate in the nation, and one of the highest fundamentalist counts as well.

They are trying to rewrite history to make Jefferson (who was so appalled by the Xian “bible” he re-wrote it!) into an Xian supporter and fundamentalist. (I use the term Xian instead of “Christ”-ian, because there is nothing of either the real historical figure, who taught the Golden Rule and nothing more, or the biblical Jesus with all the trappings and dogma.

Neither of the Jesii have ANYTHING to do with what this fool preaches. “Slaves to government?” Or slaves to corporations? At least with government, you get to choose from Column A or Column B – in the corporate world, you’re just another “peasant” to be exploited at minimal cost for the benefit of the shareholders. Unless they take out life insurance on you so when they work you to death, they make a huge profit.

Do not believe for a second that this is not war – cultural, moral, economic, intellectual, anti-science, anti-intelligence war, with the goal being the new fascist world order, with the Xian right-wing at the top and the rest groveling at the bottom.

Wrong; hackery like yours is the last refuge of the weak minded.

The gold is always in the comments:

“So wait, God’s plan is to screw thousands of people (millions if you want to go national) to help support a handful who didn’t need the help in the first place?

          God’s such a douche.”
