Republicans act as if they are the protectors of the rich. They will hold American society hostage to protect the wealth and interests of the highest earning Americans. But do wealthy Americans always love Republicans for their protection of entrenched wealth? No! As it turns out, many wealthy Americans are willing to embrace liberal ideas.

Warren Buffet, the richest man in the United States, leans to the left of the political spectrum. Buffet stated that, “I just think that – when a country needs more income and we do, we’re only taking in 15 percent of GDP, I mean, that – that – when a country needs more income, they should get it from the people that have it.” If the richest man and wisest investor in America believes that taxes on the highest incomes should be raised, this should indicate that liberal polices on tax rates are correct.

Warren Buffet is just a special example, you say? Wrong! The Top 20 Wealthiest Americans list is actually dominated by Democrats. Bill Gates and Larry Ellison are the next two richest people in America. And they are both Democrats. Christy Walton, the heir of the Wal-Mart fortune, comes in at #4 and is an independent. She frequently donates to both Republican and Democratic politicians. The #5 and #6 spots in America are owned by the Kochs, making them the richest conservatives. Overall, the Top 20 is 60% Democrat and 40% Republican. When you take out duplications from the same family, this number jumps up to 75%!

We can’t forget that many liberal politicians are wealthy Americans encouraging tax increases on themselves. President Barack Obama made $5.5 million in book sales back in 2009. Nancy Pelosi is the 12th richest member of Congress with an estimated net worth of $58 million. Harry Reid’s personal wealth is estimated to be between $3.1 million and $6.7 million. John Kerry is the richest member of Congress. Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who was often called a socialist, was a member of the wealthy elite and considered a traitor by many rich conservatives. It’s quite common for Democrats to be rich! If you research your state’s U.S. senators, they’ll more than likely be in the top 2% of Americans.

Left leaning and independent members of the upper class are actually easy to find. You’re about 3 times more likely to find a liberal in America’s upper class than to find a Muslim in India, a country that has the world’s third largest Muslim population. In the Election of 2008, 52% of Americans earning above $200,000 voted for Obama. In 2005, the top 2% were those who earned above $160,000 a year. So these are the wealthiest of Americans! In the Election of 2004, 35% of those earning above $200,000 a year voted for John Kerry. Although this shows that the richest Americans tend to lean towards conservatives, the majority of them are still independently minded enough to vote for a liberal. And let’s not forget that 35% shows liberalism is embraced by a substantial minority of the upper class.

Abraham Lincoln once said, “Republicans are for both the man and the dollar, but in case of conflict the man before the dollar.” The Grand Old Party certainly has degraded since Lincoln’s time! Republicans will protect to the death low-income taxes on the wealthy, even when a majority of the top 2% said they were okay with higher taxes by electing Barack Obama in the Election of 2008. The Republican Party can be viewed as a promiscuous teenage boy always chasing after pretty girls. Their efforts have impressed the easier half of their desired population, but the smart and moral will always see their faults and won’t be duped into making a bad relationship decision. Wealthy Americans have shown a welcoming nature to liberalism, so it’s always important that we progressives don’t become prejudice ourselves.

  • In response to Palin Power….please get your meds refilled. Or have you lost your insurance? Most drug companies have programs to provide anti-psychotics to people in need. Please take them, now!

  • This article is FULL OF BULLSHIT! When Palin becomes President, she will COMPLETELY DESTROY liberalism once and for all! Liberalism and Progressivism will GO EXTINCT in the Palination! WE ARE A RIGHT WING CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVE PALINATION!

  • I feel this article falsely equivocates “Democrat” with “Liberal”.

Sponsorship of democrats by wealthy interests might easily be done with the intent of influencing the decisions of those democrats to be more conservative, or to support conservative democrats in primary elections to ensure that a liberal can not be elected in an office at all!

Sponsorship of democratic candidates does not make a wealthy person liberal, and in fact such sponsorship can conceivably keep liberals out of office.

As such, I feel the article suffers from a crippling flaw in logic that makes its’ conclusions invalid.

    • Although what you described is certainly true, I believe that most if not all of the examples I used show a genuine liberal stance on issues or at the very least left-leaning independent thought.
