Joe Lieberman has bounced back and forth between the Democratic And Republican Parties for years now, siding with the GOP a majority of the time. But he has now taken a step towards being a Tea Party member.
Today, during the debt ceiling debate in the Senate, Lieberman announced that he was working on a plan with Republican Senator Coburn that would cut Social Security in an effort to give even more money to the already over funded Military Industrial Complex. Here is what Lieberman had to say on the Senate floor.
LIEBERMAN: “I want to indicate today to my colleagues that Senator Coburn and I are working again on a bipartisan proposal to secure Social Security over the long-term, we hope to have that done in time. To also forward to the special committee for their consideration. So, bottom line, we can’t protect these entitlements and also have the national defense we need to protect us in a dangerous world while we’re at war with Islamist extremists who attacked us on 9/11 and will be for a long time to come.”
Translation? Let’s slash Social Security funds and use them to fund defense. That is what Lieberman seems to be saying. And his plan is far from “bipartisan”. Lieberman has demonstrated his preference for conservative policies time and time again. Plus, not one real Democrat has endorsed this plan. Sounds to me like this is just another back door assault on Social Security in the name of “bipartisanship”.
