Mitch McConnell Admits That Republicans Took America Hostage

Author: August 4, 2011 7:10 am

Senate Minority Leader Micht McConnell (R-KY)

Much to the shock of the Washington Post, Mitch McConnell admitted that his party took the debt ceiling hostage and by extension, America. He even admitted that many of his Republican colleagues were willing to kill the hostage.

“I think some of our members may have thought the default issue was a hostage you might take a chance at shooting,” he said. “Most of us didn’t think that. What we did learn is this — it’s a hostage that’s worth ransoming. And it focuses the Congress on something that must be done.”

McConnell also stated that he “could imagine doing this again.” In other words, expect the Republican Party to play the part of hostage taking terrorists every time the debt ceiling needs to be raised. And every time the future of America is at stake. This shows how little the Republican Party cares about America and the American people. So next time the right-wing proclaims their love for America, remember that they were willing and are always willing to shoot America in the head for political gain.

  • The Teaparty is a bunch of sore losers who want to punish the country for electing Obama and blaming Bush for trashing the economy. So they want to trash the economy again! They are not patriotic Americans…….they are Anarchists and should be deported to some island with no government. Some island with lots of Cyclones or hurricanes and tsunamis.

the real problem is nobody has the guts or the “juice” to introduce and pass a budget/ideal/program to help those who elected them. Its all about getting into power then staying there as long as possible.

  • You do realize your caption spelled his name incorrectly?

“… Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hateful bird.” Rev. 18:2

  • It’s not that Republicans hate America (well, at least in THEIR minds they don’t hate America).

But they do hate GOVERNMENT. They hate the American government.

You know, that government that is OF THE PEOPLE, BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE.

Yes, that same government that is their employer.

Republicans want to kill government by “starving the beast.”

You know who else staged an elaborate attack on America for the same purpose of killing the American government? Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda.

So now, Republicans are doing the work of a dead terrorist.

As such, they are traitors, and should be brought up on charges of treason.

The anti-government extremists within the Republican Party, who used to comprise only a portion of the Republicans in Congress, now comprise almost all of them. I have long described them as the “Timothy McVeigh wing of the Republican Party.” He hated the American government, too.

The last paragraph foreshadows (again) the loss of democracy in the United States. Even though McConnell can’t resist gloating, it is unlikely the American people will wake up in the (diminishing) time available to save themselves.

    • Treason.
someone should arrest him and any other involved in trying to ruin the USA. they took a pledge to protect the country. driving it into the ground is not protecting it

  • The Fairness Doctrine was repealed in 87 after decades of debate – as it was clear violation of first amendment right. Ironically the same amendment that protects the hacks that run this liberal rag, and their right to misinform the public.

The general slant on most of these sites – is the notion that the raising of the debt ceiling saved us – somehow averted us from the abyss. It merely prevented a default. It’s like increasing your limit on your credit card. Only we’re already under water – nearing a GDP to Debt ratio of 100% – and we’re barely able to make our ‘minimum payment’. Damn straight the Republicans will do this again the next time the ceiling needs to be raised. We’re drowning financially as a country – so if this isn’t solved soon – we’re REALLY in trouble… – Who’s holding whom hostage here? The Democrats for refusing to deal with the problem – or the Republicans for forcing them to address it? It’s all a matter of perspective I suppose – I for one would love to see the govt held to the same principles that I and all of us other non-elected individuals must live under = live within our means

Of course, the debt, the debt ceiling, and the deficit are only problems during Democratic administrations. The debt itself is never mentioned during Republican administrations. For the 40 years from 1960-2000 (20D,20R), the Government Accounting Office released the following data:

“The twenty years of budgets prepared by Republican presidents increased the national debt by $3.8 trillion. The average yearly deficit under Republican budgets was $190 billion.

“The twenty years of budgets prepared by Democratic presidents increased the national debt by $719.5 billion. The average yearly deficit under Democratic budgets was $36 billion.”

Not that facts influence the true believers…

    • Fiona Mackenzie

Needless to say, the Republican whining about raising the debt ceiling is manipulative garbage. It is their administrations that make it necessary; it is their disingenuousness that forces the more responsible Democratic party to do the dirty work to save the nation.

    • “Barely able to make the minimum payment..”

Huh? At current interest rates — before these morons screwed our credit rating — our minimum payment was PEANUTS, because we had such a great credit rating.

NOW we’re going to have a little more problem with it.

I’m a deficit hawk. We’re completely misusing credit. But threatening a gratuitous default is NOT a good way to deal with one’s creditors.

The problem is NOT our ability to pay. We’re nowhere near that point. The problem is our lack of financial discipline.

Guess what. They did all the damage — without fixing the problem.

    • That’s the problem with the Tea Bag mentality. They can’t understand economics and the global markets. We can’t run the country like a household budget. It doesn’t work that way. The debt ceiling has been raised 80 some times and never once has there ever been such dissention. This was the ploy of Mitch McConnell and the right wing tea party holding the entire country hostage to get their way. They nearly caused another depression but they could care less. If you really think you don’t need to pay taxes, stop driving your car and using my roads and bridges. And while you’re at it don’t send your kids to my schools either.

    • Yes we need to tackle the economy but JOBS are the problem. Surfing downturns the government needs to spend. It is too bad the Republicans spent like crazy creating the illusion of good times during the Reagan years. During the Bush years Cheney said “Reagan proved deficits don’t matter!”

Every time a Democrat becomes president, The GOP turn things toxic to regain control. Whether it is militias or blatant racism, they can not accept the loss of power.

Now they will destroy the country if they can’t rule. It is sick!

  • And come the 2012 elections they’ll try to deny everything and say it was all a misunderstanding or someone “doctored” the video!

  • this is openly admitted treason by an elected government representative. heads should begin rolling! help to keep this going till legal action is taken!

  • Republicans acting unethically for their own gain? I’m so surprised…

  • I dunno…massive inflation is just as much a threat to the future of America as the debt ceiling. It’s a no win situation.

  • Sorry about that last post it was meant for the story re: Palin blabbing about supposed comment by Biden saying the GOP held America hostage over the debt ceiling. I had too many tabs open. It is work to read all the articles one wants just to keep up. My apologies!

  • Wonder if Simple Palin knows that Mitch McConnell admitted that they held America hostage? Link to that article: http://www.addictinginfo.org/2011/08/04/mitch-mcconnell-admits-that-republicans-took-america-hostage/

  • I’m having problems locating the “interview” the Washington Post did according to your article. Could you please post a link to the appropriate article?

    Thanks.

  • devil's advocate on your shoulder

It’s almost cliche to argue, but these people should be tried for treason.

  • Now if only the Conservative base would stop acting like lemmings being lead down to the depths of hell and wake up and stop voting for terrorist republicans.
But we also can’t hand everything over to the gays either. Remember that Jeffry Dahmer and John Wayne Casey were gay serial killers and gay lobbyists spend tons of money to distance themselves from that fact. Someone has to be a second class citizen, it’s human nature.

It is time to let centralists and moderates show that they can find ways to appeal to a larger group and get rid of the extremists.

    • Gay lobbyists trying to cover up gay serial killers? Conservatives being the rational Republicans? Either you’re being very funny or else you need to check your tin foil hat for leaks.

    • @Anti-con? did I read this right?

“But we also can’t hand everything over to the gays either. Remember that Jeffry Dahmer and John Wayne Casey were gay serial killers and gay lobbyists spend tons of money to distance themselves from that fact. Someone has to be a second class citizen, it’s human nature.”

Are you REALLY that bassakward or did you study special to get that way? The fact that those two are SOCIOPATHIC MURDERS has NOTHING to do with their supposed sexuality! The LAST thing ANY thinking person KNOWS is that what we need we need right now is to disenfranchise ANY group who stands four square AGAINST these political terrorists!

CHEEZE AND RICE DUDE! What are you thinking? Or ARE you thinking?

  • It’s disingenuous to attribute to Republicans malice without understand that we all exist in a context without facts, just opinions, allowing sincere if irrational beliefs.

For example, that Social Security and Medicare are entitlement programs, Socialist, and that do not and cannot work because they are government run. I may suggest such programs are bought and paid for by American tax payers and program cuts exist as tax payer theft. But ultimately there is no fact that cannot be faulted for coming from a ‘biased’ source and therefore untrustworthy.

The States rights vs. Federal rights issue is an old issue, technically the last big fight over states rights related to slavery and legally protected second class citizenship status for African Americans – this was resolved with the 14th amendment.

Now the fight is back, and consistent with wanting to increase states rights is the diminishing of federal power – which defaulting on the Federal debt would accomplish, it would also 86 those toxic Socialist ‘entitlement’ programs more completely than any legislation could.

A FACT could end this partisan insanity. So I would say the most important law to re-instate, the THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE! Where every expression of point of view on TV or radio, but share time with a person expressing an opposing point of view. This helps to end polarization, and the practice elevates fact checkers and the idea of an objective fact to greater respect.

It was a Republican President that killed the Fairness doctrine. Obama, if nothing else, should sign it back into law. Politics now is the result of no fairness doctrine, of legalized echo chambers.

    • @Michael Cooke, who wrote, “For example, that Social Security and Medicare are entitlement programs, Socialist, and that do not and cannot work because they are government run.”

Don’t make statements you can’t back up. Britain and Canada’s entitlement programs, for example, have been working for decades. Go on then, and as you seem to insist, please use FACTS, not opinion.

    • You are a moron. SS and Medicare are PAID into. They are not entitlements. They are self-sustaining trust funds when kept “off budget.”

      Do some fucking research.

    • @Michael Cooke… I had to reread your post 3 or 4 times to try to figure out just what you were trying to ramble about and which side of discussion you were on. Heck, I wasn’t even sure if you were reading the same article as the rest of us were! Let me just say:

1.) Social Security is called an “entitlement” because having PAYED INTO THE FUND and QUALIFYING for benefits (by reaching 60 or 62 years of age) you are ENTITLED to it BY LAW. So long as you paid in and are of the right age you cannot be denied. It’s not “socialist”. It’s not “taxpayer money”. It ONLY comes form the pool of those who have PAYED INTO IT. It is a form of INSURANCE, mandated by the US Federal Government, administered by an agency of the Government. ANY solvency problems currently faced are primarily the result of Congressional borrowing from that fund that has never been repaid. The fact that they are Government run programs has nothing to do with whether or not they are workable. In fact These programs have been among the most efficiently operated and most cost efficient programs historically speaking.

2.) You said: “It was a Republican President that killed the Fairness doctrine. Obama, if nothing else, should sign it back into law. Politics now is the result of no fairness doctrine, of legalized echo chambers.” This statement is not only true but also make perfect sense! KUDOS on this one sir!

    • If Social Security wasn’t working, Congress would not now owe it over $2 Trillion. In fact, they would not have been able to borrow anything from it, if it wasn’t working.

  • The Platzner Post

As if we didn’t already know!!! “I think some of our members may have thought the default issue was a hostage you might take a chance at shooting,” he said.

  • Katharyn Chalmers

What they don’t realize is that they are assisting President Barack Obama to win his next election with all the bull shit they are trying to make people believe that they give a damn about spending! Too late ass holes we are on to you. All this shit is normal procedure and the more you do it, the more you are exposing yourselves and I’ll see you are his next Inauguration!
