‘Pro-Life’ Republican Kansas Governor Guts Funding For Dying Infants

Another supposed “pro-life” governor has decided that children outside the womb are less important than those inside the womb. Kansas Governor Sam Brownback is gutting the agency responsible for child protective services, child support enforcement, and child, adult and family well-being services, after a failed attempt to slash funding for Head Start.

Despite being able to find enough money to fund faith-based initiatives, Brownback is closing 8 Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services centers, citing agency cost savings. A ninth center was saved because of public outcry.

Reducing the number of children in poverty is supposedly one of Brownback’s goals but cutting essential services that aid vulnerable children is NOT helping them stay above the poverty line. It leaves children in serious risk of dying from hunger or sickness. And the statistics are not in Kansas’ favor. The state dropped to 40th in infant mortality, and has the terrible distinction of being the worst in the country in terms of African-American infant mortality.

Governor Brownback is an enemy of children in Kansas. He is killing children with the destructive policies of the religious right, so that he can replace them all with fetuses that will be at risk after birth. It’s a sad reality we are living in, when we allow children that are already born to die in an effort to control what a woman decides about her pregnancy.

  • Why are Kansas and Missouri two of the most bigoted and backwards states in the US?

Why aren’t more people talking about the anti-choice hypocrisy and the fetus before child agenda of the far right?

Republicans obviously hate us and have some bad things in mind for 2012.

  • Don’t blame the governor. He’s only in that position because enough people voted for him.
If you want to blame anyone, blame the citizens of Kansas for putting such a turd in high public office.
You deserve the government you elect.
If you don’t like it, fight to change it.

    • “Don’t blame the governor. He’s only in that position because enough people voted for him.”

Sad reality is that the people of Kansas didn’t vote for him. Koch Brothers money voted for him. The people voted for lies that they thought was truth, lies put there by big money that controls the airwaves. How can a state go from Governor Sebelius to this governor? By riding the right wing political wave created by big money. Just the same, after his shameful record in the senate, people should have known better.

  • If he can find money for faith-based initiatives, that means the separation of church and state is being violated, and if churches want a say in politics, then they damn well should be paying taxes…taxes which could save these other programs idiots like him find to be superfluous!

  • >>children outside the womb are less important than those inside the womb.

WTH? “those [children] inside the womb?

Please don’t buy intro the bogus language and issue framing of the anti-choice zealots.

“Embryo” and “fetus” are the terms to use.

  • Jesus gave only two rules to follow him: Love thy neighbor as thyself, and love God. Every other “rule” is made up and designed to control people. I have found that most of the rabid anti-abortion folks don’t give a damn about what happens to children after they are born. This is nothing new, and it is unlikely to stop until the streets are littered with little dead bodies. Even then, they are going to call it “God’s will,” and then we’ll be left with no alternative but to shoot the bastards.

  • He’s a conservative. I’m sure his logic is “we want there to be less people in poverty, so if we cut enough services to the poor, they’ll decide to stop being poor.”

  • Dear Kansas legislators, congratulations. Decades of slashing education funding has resulted in your moronic constituency. These are people whom you may manipulate using any doublespeak you desire. It’s nice of you to try to bring Natural Selection back in to society, especially since your Jesus Thugs are so hostile towards it in the first place. May the poorest and neediest amongst you die horrible and tragically – especially those with black skin.

  • This is the most horrible thing I’ve read in a while. It makes me so angry and afraid that I can’t think clearly.

  • With all due respect to your position Governor Brownback, you are not a Christian. You may be pro life Sir, but to follow that up with policies that allow the children in your state to suffer is shameful.
Wouldn’t a true Christian work to stop children from dying of lack of medical care?
Wouldn’t a true Christian work to stop children from suffering from hunger or dying of malnutrition?
Wouldn’t a true Christian work to stop children from dying in gang shootings or car accidents?
Wouldn’t a true Christian work to prevent unwanted pregnancies?
Do anti-abortion and right-to-life advocates only work hard stop abortions, or do they do the things listed about as well?
Forgive me Governor Brownback, but based on the agenda I’ve seen of the far right, they seem to care passionately about preventing abortions, and not very much at all about infants and children who are already born and are American citizens.
It seems to me that the far right believes that once the doctor slaps the newborn on the @$$, that newborn needs to have chosen it’s parents well, or it had better pull itself up by the bootstraps and make it’s own way in the world.
This is America. We can do better than that, if we sincerely work to implement public policies which are beneficial for ALL Americans, not just the wealthiest among us.

    • Wake up people. First of all, he IS a Christian. That is the problem. The only requirement to be a Christian is to accept Jesus and be “saved”. Yes I agree that this man is ridiculous. But make sure you know what Christianity is…..I used to think it was about being the proper kind of person. That is called secular humanism. This guy may be a “follower of Christ”, but he is a VERY bad man:(

      • Elaine Vincent

I must disagree that Brownback is a Christian. He may profess to be a Christian by virtue of accepting Jesus and being saved; however, if one accepts Christ, he/she tries to be a “follower of Christ.” As such, he/she would follow Christ’s teachings, i.e. “In as much as you have done it unto the least of these my children, you have done it unto Me.” If Brownback is a Christian, he certainly is a “backslider.”

      • this man is not a Christian. A Christian is a person that adheres to the life and teaching for Jesus of Nazareth. Therefore, even though he may call himself a Christian, his very actions are not the teachings of christ.

      • Who says the “ONLY” requirement to be a Christian is to “accept Christ” etc. Not Jesus. not the Bible…

      • Rick Shreiner

He is a prime example of a CINO.

    • Lforprosperityandhealth

Too many of these hypocritical GOPers claim to be Christian, but we can see by their actions they have been “taught” by their campaign staff how to lie to get voted into office. Look at Perry – the people of the county he grew up in and lived in don’t like him at all. And for all his “prayers” for rain God is ignoring him completely – why? Because he does NOT follow God’s laws, and Jesus’s way. His heart is corrupt and cruel. That is true for the majority of GOPers who are in Congress or just in office now.

  • Another freaking scumbag republican! They want to make sure these babies are born then they will turn around and scream WELFARE BABIES! I would love to freaking meet this guy. What is wrong with this country? People are voting republican and I can’t get it. They call me liberal like it is a dirty word Tree hugger another Dirty word! People like this are the reason that the christian churches are loosing congregations like mad.

    • Scarlett White

i agree, this guy has it all backwards. I’m sure funding could be cut in other areas. To do this endangers the lives of children, period. There is just no excuse for it.
