Obama Declares ‘National Emergency’ over Jobs, Makes Unscripted Plea to Supporters

On the heels of the news that 46.2 million Americans are living in poverty – the most since 1959 – Obama has rolled up his sleeves and thrown his shoulder into the proverbial wheel to drum up popular support for the American Jobs Act, which economists predict will add nearly 2 million jobs and grow the economy by 2 percent.

Let’s not understate the President’s push: Obama’s on the road really busting his a** to push the recalcitrant Congress into passing the American Jobs Act in a hurry. And he needs your help.

At North Carolina State University on Wednesday, the President declared the persistent unemployment rate a “national emergency” and pleaded with Americans to “kick off our bedroom slippers and put on our marching shoes” to force our representatives to action.

In an unscripted moment, a voice shouted from the crowd “I love you, Barack!” The President replied:

I love you back. But if you love me you’ve got to help me pass this bill…It starts with your help.

Obama also shot back at Republicans who are opposing the job-creating bill simply to obstruct and defeat the President (One top Republican aide told Politico: “Obama is on the ropes; why…hand him a win?”).

Give me a win? Give me a break! That’s exactly why folks are fed up with Washington. This isn’t about me…It’s about giving the American people a win.

If there were ever a time to respond to a political call to action and get involved, the time is now. Thousands upon thousands of your fellow citizens ARE heeding the call and the more who join, the more power we re-appropriate to the People.

If you let Obama hang out to dry, you’re doing the same to the 15.1 percent of this country who lives in poverty, as well as the many more people who will succumb to poverty if we don’t spark job growth soon.

Take a moment, right now, to make at least one contact. Call, fax, Facebook, tweet, or write to one of your Representatives in Congress. Here’s how to reach them:

The President continued to bring his case to the people at the Wednesday speech in Raleigh as he translated into local numbers the jobs and economic relief the American Jobs Act promises. He said the bill includes provisions to:

  • Create 19,000 jobs for North Carolina construction workers, who will tackle projects like repairing the state’s 153 structurally deficient bridges and renovating schools,
  • Save the jobs of 13,000 North Carolina teachers, cops and firefighters, and
  • Provide a $1,300 tax cut to the typical family.

Conversely, if Congress refuses to pass the bill, middle class families will get hit with a tax increase when the current payroll tax holiday expires.

On Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) introduced the American Jobs Act to the Senate as S. 1549. Republicans say the bill has no chance in the House. So far, no member of the House has introduced Obama’s bill.

The continued Republican obstructionism is likely to be fierce. Even though the bill favors businesses by offering tax credits for hiring workers, Republicans still oppose it because Obama will again ask for tax reform (like eliminating some corporate loopholes) in order to pay for these job-boosting, working-class investments.

Moreover, creating jobs now would undo the job-killing budget cuts Republicans have hammered through in the last nine months (Read an article on GOP attempts to squelch job growth and Click for the link to download a Word Doc Chart titled “Impact-of-Republican-Budget-Cuts-on-Jobs-and-Economy-2011).

  • I’ve been haranguing my tea-partying Rep, for all the good it does. She sent me an automated message about the importance of cutting corporate taxes and repealing the Affordable Health Care Act. *bangs head against brick wall*

and have sent two messages to my conservative Democratic Senator, as well. FIxing to fire up a message to the Republican Senator.

Thanks for the timely reminder. We really do have to do this, for all of us.

  • I contacted my 2 Senators and my Texas Representative and requested that they put the American people before party and get the Jobs Act passed. I also asked if they realize that if the President fails, we fail as a country and if they couldn’t find the courage to help get the bill passed, I could definitely find the courage to make sure that everyone I know votes against them in 2012…not that anyone I know would vote for any Republican in the first place, including me.

  • Don’t make it so complicated. All you have to do is go to usa.gov and all the information is in one place. It’s very simple. You can access the websites of all elected officials in Washington and the States. You can get all the contact information on each website and send comments directly from there. Just backpage to get to the list again. Like they say “Keep it Simple Stupid”.
