No exaggeration necessary: These same children who are tormenting their gay classmates in school are already on their way to being the successful young Republicans of America. No, not all Republicans will be homophobic, and not all bullies will be Republican, but by and large these two groups of people are in fact one in the same.
You can believe what you want about shrinking the size of government, but when it comes down to equal rights and love of thy neighbor, The Republican Party has made their stance loud and clear. “Give me my gun, give me more power over that woman than she has, let me execute some prisoners and declare war against the Mexicans. And by God keep those queers away from me.” That’s the Republican platform, ladies and gentlemen, and it’s a “lifestyle” of hatred.
Gay children, some of whom are taking their own lives because of the severity of the harassment they receive from their peers, are at the mercy of the kids with power at their schools and in their neighborhoods. And belittling others is a sad but awful reality of this power hungry band of bullies.
How can we assume kids who drive other kids to suicide are destined to be Republicans? How can we not? If they sound like a Republican and act like a Republican, their future is already clear.
The world we live in is one where Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad can come to our nation and tell us, “In Iran we don’t have homosexuals like in your country…In Iran we do not have this phenomenon. I don’t know who’s told you that we have this.” We laugh at such absurdity, but really how different is he from Republicans right here at home?
The Republican Majority Leader of North Carolina, Paul Stam, whose state is deciding now whether to ban gay marriages, recently compared gay people to “things”, saying that some “things” just shouldn’t be afforded the same rights as other “things”.
Christian Conservative Linda Harvey at “Mission: America” went one step farther and agreed with the President of Iran by saying, “There is no proof that there’s ever anything like a gay, lesbian or bisexual or transgendered child, or teen or human, there are no such humans.”
We’re faced right now with the sickest, saddest truth: Children—not adults but little boys and girls—are literally killing themselves because they cannot handle the hatred around them. Some aren’t gay, they’re just being bullied in general, but many are. And why are they doing this? Why are they removing themselves from this world so awfully, so early in their experience as a human? Because they cannot handle the hatred of the world around them. They cannot take the bullying and the constant slurs of “faggot” and “loser.”
Not all bullies will grow up to be Republican, but certainly the Conservative wing of the Republican Party are in fact these same kind of bullies. They are passing judgments and hurling insults, demeaning and ridiculing their fellow human beings and even fellow Christians, comparing them to things and even questioning whether they really exist.
It’s a sickness, and it’s a culture and community of hatred. It’s a politicized and condoned form of bullying. Will all bullies grow up to be Republican? No. But all of our kids who have taken their own lives won’t grow up at all.

Here’s how I stopped bullies from ever daring to mess with me again:
I used to be the target of about 6 older, meaner, dumber (I was targeted because i was the nerd and not athletic) and heavier students, some from my class, some from 2 classes ahead. It had gotten to the point I was afraid to go out in public. And then one day two of them came walking toward me on the sidewalk. They were not paying attention to me at all, and I could have just walked past. But I didn’t see that as an option. I was afraid one would focus on me, and the tormenting would start again. The closer they got, the more anxiety and fear I felt, until just as they walked past, to my surprise as much as theirs, I lashed out with my foot as hard as I could and caught one square in the balls. He dropped like a stone, and I immediately kicked him between the legs again, not as good a shot, but enough to double him over again. I was scared shitless, but I put my foot on his throat and said something like, “If you ever touch me again, next time I won’t stop.” I walked away till I was out of sight, then ran the rest of the way home. I had done this purely out of fear, and just knew that tomorrow I was going to really get creamed. But from that day forward, none of that group ever bothered me again. They didn’t ‘respect’ me, but they DID fear me, and that was what was necessary.
Gay kids – take karate lessons, kung-fu, jujitsu, whatever. learn to defend yourself and don’t be afraid to do so. Rednecks will fight back, so be careful, but religious bigots one-on-one will usually fold like a cheap card table and resort to calling you an Agent of Satan. Which you are, sent here to punish evangelicals for being so stupid as to believe their own fairy tales…

Drac, thanks. YOu are correct, there were only two, when I kicked the first one, the other was just stunned. But his presence was part of the reason i ran. I’m not proud of what I did, but I was in a no-win, survival situation. When you’re in a war zone, you do shit you’re not proud of later, but this did the job that had to be done.
Gandhi/Jesus/turn-the-other cheek tactics would not have been of any help here, I’d just have been even more of a target. It’s the Republican tactics turned on their heads, the true Shock and Awe campaign, one-on-one.
