- Don’t let the Right takes yours away!
I will say that my big priority is making sure that as many people are participating in our democracy as possible. Some of these moves in some of the other states that we’ve seen try to make it tougher to vote, restricting ballot access, making it hard on seniors, making it hard on young people.
I think that’s a big mistake, and I have made sure that our Justice Department is taking a look at what’s being done across the country to ensure that people aren’t being denied access to the franchise.
And with those words, President Obama has officially slapped the GOP across the face in a challenge that will have the Right howling in protest.
For the last several months, we liberals have watched as Republican dominated State after Republican dominated State have passed law after law restricting the ability of people to vote. The excuse has always been: “Yaaargg Gurlke Widespread voter fraud! Snargle Barfle ACORN!!! Blarg Rawrrrr Illegal Immigrants!!”
Utter horseshit. As I do so enjoy pointing out to conservatives foolish enough to parrot Fox News on this topic, the Bush Administration spent five whole years investigating voter fraud. They got less than 100 convictions. Mind you, this is when the most notorious, crooked, corrupt and eeeeeevil group of all time was still stealing every election for the last 30 years. I speak of ACORN; scourge of freedom, democracy and puppies. American puppies, no less!
So the Republican White House with a Republican Congress at its beck and call couldn’t find the boogeyman they so desperately wanted to find. Hey! It’s just like WMDs!! We couldn’t find those either but that didn’t stop us from basing our foreign policy on it for a decade!
The fact that Republican efforts to “curb voter fraud” just happens to disproportionally keep Democratic voters from actually voting is just a happy coincidence, I’m sure.
Fortunately, the Department of Justice has final say on whether these laws violate the Voters Rights Act (which they do because that is the entire point of the laws). Expect there to be cries of “rigging the election!!”
Yes, Obama is rigging the election…by making sure people have the ability to legally vote. The louder the Right moans about this, the stronger the proof that the Right hates the concept of democracy and we should call them on it at every opportunity.

- Provide that the sole criteria for voter registration and regulation of persons registering voters in the U.S. shall be by regulations set by the Federal Elections Commission
- Outlaw the imposition of any requirement for registering to vote other than the unsupported declaration under penalty of perjury that the person registering is eligible to vote / ban the increasing state-level insistance on government-issued photo-IDs for voting, limits on student voting, and limits on same-day registration / adopt registration-friendly rules for voter registration drives
- Define as a “poll tax” any photo-ID requirement for voting ; define as a “poll tax” any candidate filing fee
- Provide for “early voting” in all jurisdictions
- Provide that any multi-jurisdictional campaign to interfere with the electoral franchise shall be prosecutable under RICO and related statutes, including those efforts using a sham excuse of preventing voter fraud

The actions I have problems with are things like this. Many states have a lower-cost ‘walker’s ID’ to get around the photo ID problem. Refusing to send out absentee ballots just because someone missed one (maybe being in a war zone can make you lose track of the days, ya think?) is a rather deliberate attempt to weed out a specific group of voters.
Interesting how while the Republicans are watching and hunting for “voter fraud,” election fraud being committed by their backers is what is really stealing the elections for them.
