NOM Attacks Transgender Son Of Republican Ally Of DOMA Repeal
The National Organization for Marriage is continuing it’s hatred of the LGBT community and this time it is attacking the transgender son of a House Republican.
The organization is going after Rodrigo Lehtinen, the transgender son of U.S. Congresswoman and Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, because they are convinced that he is the reason why his mother is supporting repeal of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act.
On Wednesday morning, the organization’s President, Brian Brown, tweeted the following. “Transgendered daughter of marriage flip-flopper Rep. Ros-Lehtinen played part in decision to abandon DOMA?” Also in his tweet, Brown linked to an article citing conservatives in her district attacking Ros-Lehtinen saying “this isn’t what they signed up for.”

Rodrigo Lehtinen works for the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and in February was a trainer at the National Conference on LGBT Equality. His mother was an original supporter of DOMA but has since changed her mind because of the views of her children.
“They think of it as a Neanderthal way of thinking not to accept someone because of their sexual orientation,” Representative Lehtenin said in an interview with the Miami-Herald. “My kids just say, ‘So and so is gay.’ It’s like, ‘He likes chocolate ice cream.’ It’s a total mind shift among generations. … As new generations raise up, a lot of taboos will be laid to rest.”
Congresswoman Ros-Lehtnenin has the courage to stand up for the LGBT community. She is listening to her children as well as the rest of the younger generation rather than obeying NOM. Most Republicans have put the war against gay rights center stage over the last three years, and NOM has been especially active during that period of time. But this story serves as an example of how the younger generation can influence conservative politicians and bring them back from the depths of hatred and into the light of equality and love. Other conservatives would be wise to begin supporting gay rights and reject NOM and the Christian Right. After all, it’s about time they start listening to the American people instead of a small number of Bible thumpers.

If Brian Brown thinks he’s going to win any points with Congressional members by attacking their children, he’s sadly mistaken and far more stupid than anyone ever imagined.
