NYPD Escalates Tension And Uses Force While On Horseback at Occupy Wall Street Protest

I have always believed that one of the first priorities for an officer of the law should be to reduce tensions and bring down the temperature–if at all possible–in any situation they find themselves in. However, after viewing the video below, it is clear that certain members of the NYPD do not share my philosophy.

The use of police horses to control the crowd and set up barriers tonight in NYC, appears to increase the level of risk for those that had gathered there this evening. In the video, the protesters do not seem to be threatening the police or behave in a any way that would be considered unlawful. In fact, from what I see here, they look and sound terrified by the actions of the police on horseback. At one point, you can hear someone say, “The fucking horse stepped on me!” Shortly after, a police officer can be seen swinging his baton at a citizen behind the barrier.

Early on in the recording, you can hear the protesters chant, “Who are you protecting?” The answer is clear: Not anyone at this rally.

  • It looks like the crowd is getting rowdy and for what reason would this be? I see a lot of very young people and wonder if they are there for the ‘event’ or there for the ’cause’ … By the way respect breeds respect. Let’s hold it together and more of a statement will be made. Just sayin’ …
