Rick Santorum, in another attempt to alienate anyone who’s not straight and male, told Family Research Council President, Tony Perkins, that the best way to “eliminate” a Democratic advantage would be by getting rid of single parent households. He claimed that single mothers are the “base” of the Democratic party and apparently, not only do single mothers vote Democratic, they create big government by needing assistance. The answer, he said, is to “build two parent families, you eliminate that desire for government.”
From Right Wing Watch:
Santorum: Look at the political base of the Democratic Party: it is single mothers who run a household. Why? Because it’s so tough economically that they look to the government for help and therefore they’re going to vote. So if you want to reduce the Democratic advantage, what you want to do is build two parent families, you eliminate that desire for government.
It’s not clear how Santorum would do that. Would he outlaw premarital sex? Would he outlaw divorce? It would be nice if deadbeat dads would be forced to pay, but all of those solutions would require the resources of the government. Of course, if women had choice over their own bodies, there would be fewer single mothers.

The easiest way to create two parent families would be to scrap the entire concept of child support, end alimony, and then cut welfare payment by 50%.
It’s well overdue. We just need someone with the balls to do it.
So, you’d like to make women economic prisoners to their husbands?
I posted this on another site as well, just to be honest about it. I’ve had enough of these smugly ignorant, uniformed mouthpieces. His comments really ticked me off.
**”they create big government by needing assistance. The answer, he said, is to “build two parent families, you eliminate that desire for government.”**
Hey, Santorum, how about you ask Child Support Enforcement, and about 13 million single FATHERS why $110.3 BILLION in UNPAID child support exists. Then do a study – another study – to confirm that single mothers are paid less than their married peers, that single mothers statistically are paid HALF of what single fathers are paid. Then you’d better ask yourself WHY single mothers have had to turn to the government to fill the gaps. You can start with the fact that equal pay is the LAW of the land, but not the PRACTICE. You can follow up by investigating why single mothers with sons – especially teen-aged sons – are discriminated against regularly when it come to housing.
ASK some single mothers what they’ve been through at the hands of the system, your ridiculous policies, their irresponsible exes, and exploitative employers.
Then check in with the churches that have so-called programs for single mothers. Can’t find any? There’s your sign. Ask those churches why they aren’t emphasizing the message to men that they have a moral, ethical, Christian obligation to support their families and why they’ve been giving men a pass on all that FOREVER.
As for single moms supporting the Democrats, why is that a problem? Why are you characterizing that as a problem? What purpose will it serve anyone to castigate single mothers – yet again – instead of addressing the problems they face?
And then consider this: find out how many women, who used to be Republicans, changed when they found out how Republicans treated them, what havoc Republican policies wreaked on their families, why Republican employers exploit single moms, and why government agencies like CSE REFUSE to do their jobs, collect the child support, protect the rights of those children and their single mothers, and why so many men do everything they can to avoid supporting the children they made.
And remember, Santorum, it didn’t take a court order for those deadbeats to make those babies.
You want to blame someone? Blame the guys who created the problem in the first place and do something tangible about THAT.
Leave the single mothers alone. They have work to do, children to raise, bills to pay, and politicians who GET IT to vote for.
If you want votes from single mothers, you might try to curtail your criticism, castigation, condescension, and otherizing of them. Trying to make them feel bad about choosing Democrats over Republicans – especially given the 1,000+ bills you yahoos have passed designed to take away our rights, freedoms, health care, and life chance opportunities – won’t get you any votes.
Guilt and disparagement doesn’t work on single mothers. We’ve already paid those dues. And what you said just makes you “one of the guys”.
Take your class warfare misogyny and stick it.
I’d love to know exactly how he would “build” two-parent families. Some kind of dating service? Government-enforced shotgun weddings?
Now how could a person of even average intellegence come up with a thought like that??
mmm, dead beat dads not paying child support is why single moms need government assistance…well, the Repugs should know since Joe Walsh owes 100,000 in back child support.
Gee, I can’t figure out why single mothers would vote for Democrats. Could it be that the Republicans have verbally abused single mothers by saying they are lazy disgusting whores or some such thing just like the deadbeat bastard did when they were together?
Or could it be the laws Republicans demand that take not only the food out of the mouths of the children and her own and take her much needed few dollars and hand it over on a silver platter to the Corporate Welfare Queens?
Or could it ne the laws Republicans demand for their war on the poor that insures that her family remains in poverty?
Naw!
Couldn’t agree with you more Mike S.!
The picture the current crop of Republican loser candidates paint of their ideal America looks more and more like The Handmaid’s Tale every day.
