Dan Savage Offers To Let Herman Cain Prove That Being Straight Is A Choice

Herman Cain says that homosexuality is a choice and that it’s up to us, the thinking people, to prove that it’s not a choice.

If being gay is a choice, it naturally follows that being straight is a choice, right? Well, the always brilliant Dan Savage has offered himself as a human guinea pig. He’s challenged Herman Cain to prove that being straight is a choice, by offering to let Cain *um* have his way with him. In his blog, Savage wrote this letter to Cain:

Dear Herman,

If being gay is a choice, show us the proof. Choose it. Choose to be gay yourself. Show America how that’s done, Herman, show us how a man can choose to be gay. Suck my dick, Herman. Name the time and the place and I’ll bring my dick and a camera crew and you can suck me off and win the argument.

Very sincerely yours,

Dan Savage

Savage then added:

And then I’ll say this: when someone argues that being gay is a choice, he’s not just insulting gay people. (And ignoring the science of sexual orientation.) He’s insulting straight people. If homosexuality is a choice, then so is heterosexuality. Last night on CNN Herman Cain said that being straight is something that a straight person can take or leave. Herman Cain believes that heterosexuality is something a heterosexual can decide to walk away from, like a underwater house or a lousy meal. Straight people should get angry when they hear a straight person making this argument.

I agree. Dan, thank you for offering to make the ultimate sacrifice.

I’m straight. There was no conscious choice involved. Sexual orientation is not a choice. Fine. Most of those who are open minded have known this for years. I have fought for all the same things Occupy and the progressive movement have fought for since the late sixties when I went to college. I have fought for these rights my whole life.

However, I am tired of people like Dan Savage reducing everything to crudity. “Suck my dick, Herman. Name the time and the place and I’ll bring my dick and a camera crew…” Can you possibly demean yourself more Dan? Can you stoop lower, can you find more foul language to express yourself?

I want gays to have all the same rights and respect I demand. I also want gays to respect my lifestyle. I don’t care to have images of men sucking men in my head. What turns you on turns me off. I don’t care what YOU do in private. I do care what you do in public. To all homosexuals out there: just because there are those in the hetero community who will fight for your rights doesn’t mean we also are attracted to gay sex. Personally, I don’t find the act of gay sex between men attractive. I find it gross because that’s not MY sexual orientation.

Please don’t expect me and all other heterosexual people to be attracted to what you find attractive. Stop shoving your sex acts around. I don’t shove my private acts in your face. Show me and others the same respect.

So, Jason! Do you not have gay sex because you don’t want to, or because you think it is wrong? Because if the reason is just that you don’t want to, then it’s not really any kind of moral choice, is it? At least, not like the choice you say you continually have to make about not stealing. So, when you don’t steal, you are making a moral choice. But when you don’t have gay sex, you’re really not making a choice (moral or otherwise). You just aren’t interested.

The only way your analogy works is if you actually ARE interested, and restrain your impulse. What color is YOUR closet?
