As a counterpoint to Occupy Marines, which is spreading to all the branches of the military, a new movement is brewing that will send shivers of terror down the spines of the powers that be: Occupy Police.
It’s only a few days old and has almost no presence as of yet but it has a name and a name is a powerful thing. Once a thing is named, it has a shape. Once it has a shape, it will have a voice. Where there is a voice, there is power. Occupy Wall St. itself is a prime example of this. The anger and discontent at the abuses of Wall St. had no name and, therefore, no power. The Tea Party almost gave voice to it but it was stolen by the corporations before it could find itself.
Occupy Police has taken that first, most important, step. It has sent out a signal to the police that they are part of the 99% and that they can stand with us even as they are ordered to assault us. If it grows as the rest of the Occupy movement has, the individual officer will find that they are not alone in their distaste for the tactics they are ordered to use. They will find that many of their fellow officers recognize that they, too, are of the 99% and that they, too, are fed up with a system that would enslave them for the benefit of those that despise them.
What happens when the police refuse to use violence against the non-violent? How will the powers that be try to maintain their tenuous hold on the power that is not theirs to keep? I suspect that we will not like the answer but, if we are fortunate, we will have guardians in blue truly protecting us instead of the 1%.
Time will tell.
