Battleground USA: An Open Letter To The Supporters Of Indefinite Detention

BY SURRENDERING ALL OF YOUR SAFETY & FREEDOM

Good job, everyone! Give yourselves a round of applause! You did it! We’re totally safe from terrorists now! All we have to do is convince President Obama to sign the National Defense Authorization Act, with its special amendment essentially declaring the United States a battleground, into law and we’ll never have to worry about scary terrorists in America ever again! The military will have the authority to arrest anyone they suspect of being an “enemy combatant” and lock them up forever. No courts, no trial, no appeals. Hell, they won’t even have to tell the suspects’ family what happened! America! Home of the safe!

And just wait until we get a real hard charging liberal Nazi in the White House! That Obama is too wishy washy. He’ll only kill American traitors without due process that have left the country. When we get a real Socialist in there, we’ll be able to get rid of all of those militas and anti-abortion fanatics. We’ll clean out the radical Right Wing churches and hunt down the Glenn Becks of the world. We’ll finally make those FEMA camps a reality!

What? This bothers you? You think it’s unconstitutional? Oh, it’s waaaay too late to be concerned about that old piece of paper! That all ended when you demanded that suspected terrorists not be given their rights. “They’re not Americans!” you said. “They’re enemies of the country!” you said. “They don’t deserve to be treated with respect!” you said.

The people have spoken! You insisted that Guantanamo Bay stay open because you were afraid to try the prisoners on American soil. “It’s too dangerous!” you cried. Congress heeded the call and blocked any effort to close that extra-legal prison. Now we can send potentially dangerous American citizens there, too!

I don’t understand. What are you screaming about? This is what you asked for! You wanted to be safe no matter what. This is what you were so gung ho about! Any threat to the country can be removed at will and locked away for the public good. Yeah, some of them will be innocent but that didn’t seem to bother you at all when it was Muslims. You laughed when the ACLU made a huge stink about the military randomly snatching people up in hopes of catching someone useful. Now we can do that here! We’ll start with the NRA membership list. While not every NRA member is a potential domestic terrorist, every domestic terrorist is an NRA member! Aren’t bigoted generalizations that contain only a sliver of truth awesome?! We’ll be safe in no time at all.

Oh sure, technically, they had to change the “battleground amendment” because of Rand Paul (R-Broken Clock), but don’t you worry! Even though it excludes American citizens and other legal residents for now, just wait until the first time an American Muslim blows something up on American soil. By the time the dust settles we’ll have fixed that little technicality (or maybe just ignored it altogether). We’ll be yanking “suspicious” people out of mosques in no time flat, citizen or not . Once we get used to that the way we got used to indefinitely detaining people from other countries, it’s just a small step to locking up NON-Muslims!

Let freedom ring!! Depending on the party in charge we could go after Communists and Socialists, too! Everybody wins!

You’re still upset? But you’re fine with it as long as it’s only terrorists? Silly, scared little child, you haven’t learned anything from history at all have you?

First they came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak out because I wasn’t a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

-Martin Niemöller

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.  -Benjamin Franklin

If you think these are trite little sayings, then you don’t understand them. This IS the proper context for them.

Our only hope now lies with either President Obama fulfilling his promise to veto this bill or with the Supreme Corporate Court of the United States declaring it unconstitutional. The first fills me hope, the latter, with dread. If Obama lets this get by, we’re all in danger of being targeted as “suspicious” and our country as we know it will end in our lifetimes.

Don't you FEEL safe? I can't imagine why...
