Newt Gingrich may be the front runner this week but his comments about child labor could be his doom. Gingrich recently stated:
“Really poor children, in really poor neighborhoods have no habits of working and have nobody around them who works so they have no habit of showing up on Monday,” Gingrich claimed.
“They have no habit of staying all day, they have no habit of I do this and you give me cash unless it is illegal,” he added.
On a recent episode of ABC’s The View, even the panel’s Tea Partier, Elisabeth Hasselbeck, called Newt Gingrich’s comments, “lacking of any sort of heart,” and “code” for racism.
Here’s the video:
Therein lies the problem with people like Newt Gingrich. His comments use bigotry to play to the GOP far-right base. And if even Elisabeth Hasselbeck thinks you’ve gone too far, then maybe you’ve gone too far.
His comments also run counter to the American dream by ignoring the millions of successes of people who were born poor, including the last two Democratic Presidents.
