During a stop in Iowa on his campaign trail, Rick Perry took the time to tell a young woman that he’s against homosexuals serving openly in the military because it’s a sin.
From ABC NEWS:
“I just want to know why you’re so opposed to gays serving openly in the military, why you want to deny them that freedom when they’re fighting and dying for your right to run for president,” Rebecka Green,a high school student from Decorah, asked the Texas governor.
Not an unreasonable question. Homosexuals can shoot a gun and die for their country just as well as anyone else. There is, to my knowledge, no such prohibitions against homosexuals serving on the police force or as fire fighters anywhere in the country (if you know of one, let me know who and where and I’ll happily tear them a new one). They risk their lives just as much as soldiers.
Here is Perry’s answer:
“Here’s my issue. This is about my faith, and I happen to think, you know, there are a whole hosts of sins. Homosexuality being one of them, and I’m a sinner and so I’m not going to be the first one to throw a stone,” Perry said. “I don’t agree that openly gays should be serving in the military. ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ was working…”
And that is the crux of it: it’s about HIS faith. Nothing else. All the arguments against gays in the military were just smokescreens and it ALWAYS comes down to the same thing: it’s about HIS faith. Or Bachmann’s. Or Gingrich’s. And every single conservative that is appalled that our gay troops no longer have to lie about who they are. What none of them can ever explain is what THEIR faith has to do with openly serving our country or even why that particular “sin” and not others.
Homosexuality isn’t even mentioned in the Ten Commandments but coveting is. So is bearing false witness and working on Sundays (or Saturday if you’re Jewish). Does that mean that if Rick Perry steals the pensions of state workers on a Sunday and lies about it, he is banned from military service for all time? What sins disqualify you from serving with honor? Talking back to your parents? If you’re Muslim or Jewish, does eating pork mean you can’t be all you can be? None of it makes any sense. This is what happens when conservatives impose their religious values on those that do not share them.
How about this, Rick Perry? You keep your hypocritical moralizing to yourself and we’ll take the soldiers willing to risk their lives even for ignorant fanatics like you.
