High School Girl Threatened With Violence By Christian Classmates After Suing School To Remove A Prayer Mural

Separation of church and state is an American tradition that goes back to our nation’s founding. The Constitution prohibits any one religion from being put before another, and gives everyone religious freedom. It does not allow a publicly funded institution to force religious beliefs on people. But that is exactly what Cranston High School West in Rhode Island did when they decided to place a Christian prayer mural on the premises. One girl, 16 year old Jessica Ahlquist, fought in court to have the clear violation of religious freedom removed. She won. And now her ‘Christian’ schoolmates are violently threatening her in a clearly un-Christian manner that would make Jesus weep.

When U.S. District Court Judge Ronald R. Lagueux issued his decision to rule in favor of Ahlquist, he went out of his way to praise her for her brave stand for constitutional values.

“The Court refrains from second-guessing the expressed motives of the Committee members, but nonetheless must point out that tradition is a murky and dangerous bog. While all agree that some traditions should be honored, others must be put to rest as our national values and notions of tolerance and diversity evolve. At any rate, no amount of history and tradition can cure a constitutional infraction. The Court concludes that Cranston’s purposes in installing and, more recently, voting to retain the Prayer Mural are not clearly secular. Plaintiff is clearly an articulate and courageous young woman, who took a brave stand, particularly in light of the hostile response she has received from her community.”

But the ruling of the court hasn’t stopped relentless threats of violence and ridicule from her classmates, who have taken to using social media to vent their hate and rage. Here is a but a small sample of the kinds of things these “Christians” are saying courtesy of JesusFetusFajitaFishsticks:

“May that little, evil athiest teenage girl and that judge BURN IN HELL!”

“yeah, well i want the immediate removal of all atheists from the school, how about that?”

“Jessica Ahlquist may have won her case, but she’s going straight to hell. #Godovereverything”

“I hope there’s lots of banners in hell when your rotting in there you atheist fuck #TeamJesus”

“If this banner comes down, hell i hope the school burns down with it!”

“U little brainless idiot, hope u will be punished, you have not win sh..t! Stupid little brainless skunk!”

“Fuck Jessica alquist I’ll drop anchor on her face”

“definetly laying it down on this athiest tommorow anyone else?”

“Nothing bad better happen tomorrow #justsaying #fridaythe13th”

“Let’s all jump that girl who did the banner #fuckthatho”

“literally that bitch is insane. and the best part is she already transferred schools because shes knows someone will jump her #ahaha”

“”But for real somebody should jump this girl” lmao let’s do it!”

“Hmm jess is in my bio class, she’s gonna get some shit thrown at her”

“hail Mary full of grace @jessicaahlquist is gonna get punched in the face”

“When I take over the world I’m going to do a holocaust to all the atheists”

“gods going to fuck your ass with that banner you scumbag”

“if I wasn’t 18 and wouldn’t go to jail I’d beat the shit out of her idk how she got away with not getting beat up yet”

“nail her to a cross”

“We can make so many jokes about this dumb bitch, but who cares #thatbitchisgointohell and Satan is gonna rape her.”

From the comments, it’s clear these whiny little teenagers have learned little during their education. First, they need to go back to English class and learn how to spell, capitalize, and punctuate. Second, they need to re-take every American history and government course offered at their school because it’s clear that they know nothing about either. The government can not elevate one religion over another and no religion can force itself upon those of that do not observe it. Schools that are publicly funded by states and the federal government cannot endorse a religion, including Christianity. To do so violates religious freedom as protected by the Constitution. Even Thomas Jefferson and James Madison agreed that separation of Church and State is in the Constitution:

“I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibit the free exercise thereof, thus building a wall of separation between church and state.”
~Thomas Jefferson, as President, in a letter to the Baptists of Danbury, Connecticut, 1802

“The purpose of separation of church and state is to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe with blood for centuries.”
~James Madison

Jessica Ahlquist was simply following the example of the Founding Fathers.

These whiny brats also need to go back to Sunday school and learn real Christian values as practiced by Jesus himself. Hate is not a Christian value and threatening violence on someone is not something Jesus would ever have done. This just goes to show how many Christians, particularly conservative ones that insist there is no separation, have forsaken the Bible and the word of Jesus to teach their kids to hate. Police are already investigating each of them. It’s just too bad they can’t arrest them for ignorance and stupidity.

  • Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than standing in the garage makes you a car.

Not of the comments quoted in the article come from anyone who is a Christian. They’re what I call a CINO (Christian In Name Only). No truly born-again follower of Jesus would say things like that (at least none that I know).

  • Reading those comments, one could get the idea that a thocracy might not be such a good thing.

  • Second Amendment Democrat

Christians continue to prove their hypocritical nature. There is a very good reason the founders wanted to keep religion out of government -“Bbelievers” – regardless of what it is they believe in – if you “take it on faith,” you are INSANE. Wacko. Nuts. Delusional.

The fact that there are millions of you does not make you right. Proof of that is the other “gods” out there that are ALSO the one true god, if you believe THEIR followers. And has different rules. but they ALL say they are the ONLY TRUE GOD, thereby nullifying ALL “true god” claims until scientific (yup, that big word that fundies hate so much) proof (another fundie anathema) can be established. (So far, no one has even attempted to define a testable hypothesis, never mind submit proof – of ANY of their religious claims.

If there were only ONE message, identical except for spoken tobgue, that was ‘given’ to all peoples, I could consider that there was such an entity. But between the Hindu pantheon, Christian/Judeo/Muslim one-God theory and the Buddha’s “all an illusion, zero gods” there is not even agreement on COUNT, never mind functions/capabilities of said deities.

The parents of the children making these comment should be sued by the school AND the parents of the courageous Jessica Ahlquist. If this were an ‘athiest’ (is that like “athy”, “athier”, “atheist”, as in, “I’m athier than you, but Bobby is the atheist of all…”) making threats to a “Christian” kid, the authorities would be all over them. This nation has become so ensnared in the clutches of fundie preachers, who only exist in such great numbers because – A: they don’t have to pay tax, and B: it is SO EASY to sell religion – there is no product, no backup, and none needed beyond, “You have to have faith,” and, “God moves in mysterious ways.”

So go away and play with your ‘holy’ books, mistranslated and edited for content, or grow up and recognize one simple truth – there may indeed be a “God”, but it has NOTHING to do with YOUR version of him/her/them/it (and most likely, very little to do with our current scientific version – but at least we are working toward a real answer, not just accepting a myth constructed in 325 AD to update and recycle old Egyptian deity myths……

  • I’m surprised this happened in RI, but I’d want to see the mural before I can judge my own thoughts for sure. As many others have mentioned the reaction to this girl is hardly Christian.

  • It seems that more and more ‘people’spew hate and violence these days. It really is starting to scare me. They are the supposed to be the future. Is this what our future holds, hatred, discrimination and violence?

When did our nation start regressing to a nation of animals?

    • Henry D. Rinehart

I hope you’re sitting down, Jason. Our nation began to regress when we stopped holding our politicians accountable, and we stopped paying attention to what they were doing with our government. Back in the late 1800s-early 1900s they changed the way education was done, to “accustom American children to the repetitive nature of their future employment in factories” and “to accustom them to regimentation and following orders, whether those orders make sense or not.” I kid you not, that’s what the “educational expert” who wrote the book they based the new model on said. Our politicians endorsed and embraced this, because Americans tended to be “fractious” and “individualistic”, a pair of traits that didn’t sit well with the politicians of the day. Or today, for that matter. . .

The politicians intended to make it possible for their rich friends to concentrate the wealth of the United States into just a few individuals’ greedy little hands, and knew even back then that it is easier to lie to an uneducated man than to an educated one. What they managed to accomplish was creating the Great Depression, and we barely managed, with help from some truly great and courageous individuals, to pull out of that and rebuild our country and economy.

Now, however, unconvinced by the lessons of history or simply ignorant of them, our government is on the same course. Make our children grow up ignorant, and it’s easier to lie to them, whip them into jingoistic homicidal frenzies, and terrorize them into giving up their liberty, one little nibble at a time. Sound familiar? As a result our population is now poorly- or mis- educated, we have resurgences of racial and societal tensions that an educated society would laugh at, and many of our politicians are proceeding with an agenda that has, as its culmination, the destruction of the Constitution and the ascendency of the Ecclesiastical States of Amerikkka.

This was all deliberately done to us, Jason, by people to whom “compassion”, “empathy”, “justice”, “freedom”, and “equality” are just noises to laugh at when they come out of peon’s mouths. You can see them at work in our Congress, the GOP and “Tea Party” Congressmen holding our financial system hostage for their own blighted agenda, attempting to destroy our educational system, our social safety nets, our ability to form into unions for protection against rapacious corporations, our environmental protections, and our very legal system and our Constitution itself.

Jason, the very fact that you asked that question shows there is still hope, that they aren’t triumphant yet. But they’re working hard to become so, and people like you have to get out there and fight. Don’t allow yourself to be bullied, don’t let them lie to you, make sure you pay attention to what your representatives at the local, state and federal levels are doing, and vote them out if they begin pushing to undermine the Constitution.

Only you and your friends, Jason, can stop political fires. But you have to pick up a shovel and be willing to sling some dirt, if it comes to that.

Oh, and go to the kind of blogs they mention in the article, where the local so-called “christian” kids hang out, and remind them of why the religion is called Christian in the first place.

God help us to help ourselves.

  • ya just can’t tell church folk anything. lol
    Nice job Jessica :)
