Wisconsinites Choose Stephen Colbert As Primary Challenger To Scott Walker

There is no doubt in my mind that Wisconsin loves Stephen Colbert. In fact it is not uncommon to see a protest sign with something Colbert related (for which you may or may not get arrested). It is also common to hear his name brought up in conversation from the “regular” protesters, a group I fall into. But this week Wisconsin showed just how much they love Stephen Colbert, by voting for him as the preferred primary challenger to Scott Walker. It’s true, while Facebook and the internet flooded with polls on who should run against Scott Walker, the blog site Blue Cheddar did a poll of their own. In this poll they asked who would be the best primary challenger for Scott Walker. There were many choices including Wisconsin tea party poster boy, Tommy Thompson. Tommy only got about ten percent of the vote. The winner, at about four times the votes Tommy got, was Stephen Colbert. But Blue Cheddar took it a step further and actually wrote a letter asking Colbert to run so the people can have their say.

All people who voted for Stephen also voted for a clause that stated he could stay at their place as he will need to live in Wisconsin for 28 days before he can run for office, changed this year from 10 days. In the letter, Blue Cheddar, a cat lover, offers her place. If Stephen is a dog person, however, he could always stay at my place. The letter also lists several perks of running including, but not limited to, song serenades by the Solidarity Sing Along, running circles around Scott Walker, and craft Wisconsin beer.  After all, who can turn down craft Wisconsin beer? Blue Cheddar also reminded Stephen that he will need to collect 2,000-4,000 signatures to run for Governor, but that we have experience collecting signatures here in Wisconsin. We did, after all, get over a million signatures in sixty days.

This may all seem comical to some, but here in Wisconsin we take this very seriously.  We want, very much, for Stephen Colbert to come here and primary Scott Walker. Hundreds of Wisconsin citizens have posted their calls on his Facebook page or sent them in tweets. There is now a Facebook page made simply to encourage a Colbert for Governor campaign. It is clear Wisconsin loves Stephen Colbert. We now refer to a lot of our activities as “Super PAC-tivities.” And we want him to run for Governor of our fine state. There is even a Facebook page. And don’t worry Stephen, if you get arrested for having a camera crew larger than four people (they can arrest for groups of four or more without a permit), we will bail you out. And we have a great legal network to make sure your Constitutional rights remain upheld. And now, I will join Blue Cheddar and the majority of Wisconsinites in hope that Stephen will come save us all, and challenge Scott Walker in a primary.

Cute, but it seems to me you’re trivializing the recall Wisconsin put so much effort into, especially if you’re correct in saying this is widespread. Pretty much trivializes the whole act of voting. I’d have thought you’d want to be spending this time finding and support the best actual candidate.

I will not be supporting any candidates on the GOP side which is what this is asking for. To run against Walker in a REPUBLICAN primary. I already have my candidate I’m supporting on the dems side if they enter. If not I will wait to see who does.

Very cute, but are you seriously going to throw away your chance to get that wacko Walker out of office? Colbert is funny, he’s brilliant, he has a great TV show. TV show. Not politician. TV show host. He’d garner the young, hip vote, but THE PEOPLE THAT VOTED FOR WALKER IN THE FIRST PLACE MUST CHANGE THEIR VOTE, and they VERY likely will NOT vote for a professional comedian. Remember, these are GOP voters, by and large. They don’t have a sense of humor unless it’s about insulting President Obama. Really. If you convince Colbert ot run, it will be a publicity gimmick, unless he is willing to switch careers, which I doubt. he’d be the Dems answer to Sarah “The Quitter” Palin

Just because you like someone, or because they are nice or funny, does not mean they should be your candidate. In that case, why not elect Santa Claus, or even Jesus – oh, wait, that’s what the GOP is trying to do Republican Jesus for President and Ronald Reagan for Republican Santa Claus…

Actually there is very little harm in allowing a GOP primary. While we are busy with our own set of candidates, might as well give them a chance to go to the polls as well. And look at all the people that have viewed this article. It at least keeps the attention on the recall which is a win win for everyone.
