RNC Chairman Reince Priebus Condemns January Jobs Report, Says Improving Economy Should Make President Obama Un-Electable

If anybody was going to spin the gold of the positive January jobs report into straw, it was the Republican Party. It seems almost impossible anyone can look at an improving economy and say that it proves President Obama shouldn’t be re-elected to a second term. But that’s exactly what the Republican Party is claiming.
In a statement released on Friday, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus made the January jobs report sound like the worst possible news for President Obama. You’d think the addition of 243,000 new jobs and a drop in the unemployment rate would be something to cheer for, but apparently not. The GOP sees it as proof that President Obama is doing a terrible job. Here’s the full (of bologna) statement:
“While today’s jobs report brings welcome news of lower unemployment, far too many Americans are still without work. Our economy remains unacceptably weak, and families across the country are still struggling to make ends meet.

Three years ago yesterday, President Obama said that if he didn’t have the economy fixed ‘in three years,’ his presidency would ‘be a one-term proposition.’ Today’s unemployment numbers remind us that our economy is far from fixed. That, by the president’s own standard, should make him a one-term president.
After three years in office, Barack Obama has failed to produce the economic recovery he promised. His endless pursuit of regulations, mandates, taxes and deficits made economic recovery significantly more difficult.
Our country desperately needs a change in direction. We need a president who will fight for hard-working taxpayers, not just campaign donors and his own job. As the campaigner-in-chief travels around the country, he’s making countless promises for a second term. Today’s jobs report reminds us that he could not even keep the promises from his first term.”
This statement is laughable considering that it comes from the party that caused the economic collapse in the first place. Millions of Americans would not be out of work if Republicans had actually been responsible leaders. But they weren’t. They encouraged outsourcing, weakened crucial financial regulations, and spent money like drunken sailors on unnecessary foreign wars instead of on strengthening American infrastructure and developing new industries. This is the party that wanted the American auto industry to fail. If it had, millions more would be out of work. Instead of an 8.3% unemployment rate, we’d be looking at a rate over 10%. The GOP’s idea to fix the economy is to double down on the policies that wrecked it. How is that a plan?
Since President Obama took office in 2009, he has had to deal with the continuing effects of the mess the Republicans made. To counter that mess, Democrats passed legislation to restore financial regulations that protect consumers and keeps Wall Street more honest. Democrats also created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which serves as a watchdog that will keep a close eye on what Wall Street does. President Obama has also been very good for small businesses, passing tax breaks and health care legislation that helps businesses pay for health care for their employees. That has freed up money that has been used to hire more employees.
The economy has made a steady improvement over the last year. If Republicans hadn’t been obstructing Congress, that improvement would have come much quicker and we may in fact would be talking about an unemployment rate under 7%. But rather than help Democrats fix the economy, Republicans chose to throw a temper tantrum and demonstrate their hatred of the black guy in the Oval Office by doing everything in their power to sabotage any recovery effort. Republicans are so desperate to sabotage President Obama that they rejected the American Jobs Act, a piece of legislation crafted specifically to create jobs. Mitch McConnell, the Senate Minority leader has stated ““the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term President.”
America has already experienced what conservative policies do to the economy and it hasn’t been pretty. It is now time to reinstate the liberal policies that made the American economy the strongest in the world for over 50 years before Republicans teamed up with corporations to dismantle those policies. Despite what the GOP wants you to believe, the January jobs report proves that President Obama’s policies are working. The Republicans know this. That’s why they’re spinning this report. This report marks nine consecutive months of positive job growth and the numbers just continue to go beyond expectations. Spurred by a thriving American auto industry, manufacturing is making a strong comeback in America and other industries are following. It takes a long time to clean up the kind of mess the Republicans left America in 2008. Three years is simply not enough time to fix it. And Republicans fear four more years of President Obama because they know that the economy will continue to improve with him at the helm. Because when Americans finally realize that liberal policies work, all of the conservative policies that Republicans have forced down our throats for the last thirty years will go down in flames. It would be crazy to elect a Republican after all of this improvement when the only policies they have is the exact same ones that brought the economy to its knees. Who in their right mind would want to try it again?
