Bill O’Reilly Compares Pressure To Fire Ellen DeGeneres For Being Gay To McCarthyism (VIDEO)

When JC Penny hired lesbian comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres to be their new spokesperson, the company probably knew that their decision would be openly condemned by Right Wing anti-gay groups. OneMillionMoms.com, a group sponsored by the American Family Association (an SPLC designated hate group), called for a boycott against JCPenney in an effort to pressure them into firing DeGeneres. JCPenney stood by the comic and refused to fire her to satisfy the demands of hateful bigots. Now, JC Penny and DeGeneres have a new ally: Bill O’Reilly.

Yes, I said Bill O’Reilly. You know, the Right Wing host on Fox News? Yeah, THAT Bill O’ Reilly. During a segment on his show about the Ellen DeGeneres controversy, O’Reilly compared the boycott to a witch hunt similar to what Joseph McCarthy did in the 1950s.

“If you remember with the McCarthy era, in the 50s and they were trying to hunt down communist sympathizers and not let them work and put them. What is the difference between McCarthy era communist blacklist in the 50s and the million moms saying, ‘Hey, JC Penney and all you other stores don’t you hire any gay people, don’t you dare.’ What is the difference?”

I’m actually shocked about this development. I truthfully did not expect to hear Bill O’Reilly defend Ellen DeGeneres while criticizing the group leading the crusade against her. For the first time, I AGREE with Bill O’Reilly. He’s doing the right and honorable thing here. And I agree with his comparison as well. This anti-gay crusade is nothing more than a repeat of McCarthyism. The same can be said of the anti-Muslim crusade against Lowes that pressured that company to pull ads from the ‘All-American Muslim’ television show. But allow me to add to this charge of McCarthyism by also labeling these right wing groups as hypocrites. Aren’t these right wing groups the same groups who say businesses have the right to hire and fire whoever they want? Does this boycott not fly in the face of that claim? The way I see it, JCPenney hired Ellen DeGeneres and that’s their decision and no hate group has the right to force JCPenney to fire her. It’s hypocritical that the Right Wing demands that businesses be allowed to hire and fire anyone they want for any reason, but when a business hires a gay celebrity, the Right Wing all of a sudden thinks it has the right to tell businesses what they can and cannot do.

Maybe next time they’ll think twice before entering the “No-Spin Zone!”
