Rush Limbaugh went into a tirade about Planned Parenthood today, claiming that they promote sex and pornography because they “need unwanted babies.” He also perpetuated the myth that they make most of their money off of abortions. In reality, Planned Parenthood provides many life saving services to men, women, and families, and only 3% of the procedures they perform are abortions.
He claimed “Planned Parenthood needs sex. They must have sex going on as much as possible, particularly among the youths of America.”
He went on to state that material on the Planned Parenthood website would be inappropriate to take to a park and show to children 10 to 12 years old, and that anyone who did would most likely be jailed. I agree with that assertion, but it’s also incredibly stupid of him to make it. It’s called Planned Parenthood, not Planned Growing Up. The material is targeted towards adults, and people who are capable of having children. They’re not trying to explain parenthood or sexual education to people who are pre-pubescent. They’re not going into classrooms and teaching sex ed. Although they certainly encourage schools to do it responsibly at the appropriate age. They’re informing adults about personal health, safe sex, and responsible parenting. They never claimed to be an organization primarily directed at educating children.
He also supported the myth that abstinence is the answer to unwanted pregnancies, and even endorsed a comment made by Rick Santorum’s multimillionaire benefactor yesterday, in which he stated that a woman holding Bayer Aspirin between her knees, essentially saying “keep your legs shut, women,” is an effective form of birth control.
