Virginia Republicans Look To Approve State Sanctioned Rape

The procedure is called a transvaginal ultrasound and it’s what Republicans in Virginia want to force women to go through if they want an abortion. After passing the GOP dominated Senate, the Republican controlled House is poised to pass SB 484, which will force pregnant women to be violated if they want an abortion.

The following is a summary of the bill.

Requires that, as a component of informed consent to an abortion, to determine gestation age, every pregnant female shall undergo ultrasound imaging and be given an opportunity to view the ultrasound image of her fetus prior to the abortion. The medical professional performing the ultrasound must obtain written certification from the woman that the opportunity was offered and whether the woman availed herself of the opportunity to see the ultrasound image or hear the fetal heartbeat. A copy of the ultrasound and the written certification shall be maintained in the woman’s medical records at the facility where the abortion is to be performed.

A transvaginal ultrasound is an invasive pelvic ultrasound in which a probe is inserted into the vagina to look at a woman’s reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, cervix and vagina. This is the procedure Republicans want to force women to undergo if they want an abortion.

What this boils down to is state sanctioned rape. The government is literally saying it has the power to make women go through a humiliating, uncomfortable and unwanted invasive procedure to get an abortion, despite the fact that the Supreme Court has already ruled that abortion is legal because women have the right to privacy and personal liberty. This bill may also mean that the government will have to see a woman’s private medical records to confirm that she did indeed follow the new law. Governor McDonnell has already indicated that he intends to sign the bill into law.

This law is clearly unconstitutional and immoral and it clearly places the Virginia state government in the uterus of every female in the state. Abortion is a tough decision for a woman to make. It is deeply personal and private and the government has no place in such decisions whatsoever.
