This is unfortunately not a story from The Onion. It’s really happening. Despite being denounced by Republicans and Democrats alike for his despicable attacks on women and women’s health that have caused many major sponsors to drop his radio show, Rush Limbaugh is being honored with a bust in the Missouri Statehouse.
According to ThinkProgress, the person who selects the individuals for induction into the Hall of Famous Missourians is the Speaker of the House who just happens to be Republican Steven Tilley, who not only chooses who is inducted, but is also responsible for raising private funds to create the busts.
In addition to Limbaugh, Tilley also chose Dredd Scott, the famous slave in the Dred Scott Supreme Court case in 1857. This makes the decision to induct Limbaugh even more infuriating, since Limbaugh is known for his racist comments on the air and his racist attacks of President Obama. Inducting Limbaugh to the Hall of Famous Missourians with a man who fought racial injustice is a travesty.
But Tilley doesn’t give a damn. His term is set to end in May, which is when the induction ceremony will occur, and he says it doesn’t matter what Limbaugh has done. He is still going to be inducted.
“Keep this in mind: It’s not called the Hall of Universally Loved Missourians,” Tilley stated. “We’ve inducted people like John Ashcroft, Warren Hearnes and Harry Truman. They certainly had their detractors. Those individuals took positions that at times could be controversial, clearly. Rush is no different than any of the other people. But it’s undeniable, the impact he’s had on radio and America and how successful he’s been.”
There are so many things that are wrong with Tilley’s statement. First, comparing Rush Limbaugh to Harry Truman is truly sacrilege. Truman served as President during the end of World War II and saved millions of American and Japanese lives by approving the nuclear strikes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki that finally ended the war in 1945. He then made great strides in civil rights when he integrated the armed forces. Truman is also the only President from Missouri. Rush Limbaugh is a chauvinist racist pig who makes a living attacking others and spreading misinformation. There is ZERO comparison between Limbaugh and Truman whatsoever. Second, Limbaugh is by far the most controversial figure to ever be inducted into the Hall. Only 39 individuals have been honored with a bust in the statehouse. Limbaugh’s name would tarnish the good names of those individuals. As a native of Missouri, I’m ashamed that Limbaugh is going to be honored and enshrined in a place where busts of Mark Twain, Omar Bradley, Thomas Hart Benton, Walt Disney, George Washington Carver, Walter Cronkite, John J. Pershing, and Laura Ingalls Wilder are located.
Even though Tilley made his decision to honor Limbaugh months before the current controversy, it still doesn’t excuse his choosing of Limbaugh in the first place. I’ll admit, none of the men and women already enshrined are perfect. Not everybody loved them. But Rush Limbaugh is totally different. He is a racist, a homophobe, and a sexist. And he has been a merchant of hate and division since he began his stint on radio. Tilley has the power to reverse his decision. He just doesn’t want to because he thinks a hateful and dividing conservative individual like Limbaugh deserves to be honored. What’s really sad is that Tilley sits on the House Ethics Committee, yet he thinks it’s ethical to honor Limbaugh. It speaks volumes about the lack of character of the Republican Party.
Contact Steven Tilley and protest this decision. Tell him that it’s a travesty to honor a dishonorable and despicable human being like Rush Limbaugh.
