Mitt Romney Tries To Scare 11 Year Old Boy, Says Iran Will Have Nuclear Weapons If Obama Gets Second Term

Whenever I see Republicans make an effort to scare adults, I think they’re despicable for using fear for political gain. But when I see Republicans using that same fear tactic on children, I think they’re monsters. Well, Mitt Romney became the latest GOP monster on Sunday when, while speaking in front of an audience, he told an 11 year old boy in Georgia that if President Obama wins a second term, Iran will have nuclear weapons to use against America.

“If Barack Obama gets re-elected, Iran will have a nuclear weapon and the world will change if that’s the case. This president failed to speak out when the dissidents took the streets in Tehran, he had nothing to say. This is a president who has failed to put in place crippling sanctions against Iran. He’s also failed to communicate that military options are on the table and in fact in our hand. And that it’s unacceptable to America for Iran to have a nuclear weapon. I will have those military options, I will take those crippling sanctions and put them in place, and I will speak out to the Iranian people about the peril of them becoming nuclear.”

I have a major problem with these comments. First of all, Romney is basically telling a child that war is coming. He is intentionally trying to scare a little kid into begging mommy and daddy to vote for him. Not because Romney is a great guy or because he has good ideas, but because Romney scared him into believing that he will be attacked if he doesn’t convince them to vote against President Obama this November. It’s a fear tactic that is being used on an unacceptable level. What kind of politician tries to scare kids? Shouldn’t Romney be assuring and calm instead of frightening? This poor kid probably doesn’t even know where Iran is, yet Romney is standing there and telling him that Iran will have the capability to kill us all if President Obama wins re-election. It’s disgusting and teaches the kid to hate.

The fact is, a war with Iran would be a devastating venture for the United States. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken over a decade to wage and they are small nations in comparison to Iran. Iran has 545,000 active troops and 350,000 in reserve (IISS Military Balance 2006, Routledge for the IISS, London, 2006, p.187). Then there’s the Basij, a paramilitary militia force with 90,000 full time members and 11 million in reserve, according to GlobalSecurity.org. Forget about the Iranian Navy and Air Force. The fact is, Iran can quickly mobilize millions of men and women to put up one hell of a fight. Sure, we could bomb them, but it would cost trillions of dollars to do so, and we would still have to deploy ground forces that don’t have near the numbers necessary to combat the kind of forces Iran can muster. Their forces would likely hide in bunkers and wait to wage guerrilla warfare, which means we can expect casualties to be higher than in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. Iran is a large country and oil prices are already rising because of the threat of a war. Just imagine how high the prices will go if we actually do declare war like Republicans want. A war with Iran would absolutely require a military draft and would take so long to wage that the 11 year old boy Romney was talking to could one day end up being drafted to fight it. That 11 year old boy and thousands more like him would fight and die on a distant battlefield because their parents allowed fear to engulf them. Right now, America has a President who seeks peace and diplomacy. He has already successfully slapped Iran with tough sanctions and is working with the international community to pressure Iran even more. And President Obama has already said that military options are on the table. Republicans want a war, pure and simple. If they win in 2012, America will get involved in another bloody and costly war that will take a long time to win. It would cripple our economy and wipe out a generation of American men. And once Republicans are through with Iran, what next? Do we declare war on North Korea because of their attempt to get nukes? Do we declare war against the rest of the Middle East? How about China? They have nukes. Perhaps they’d also like to go to war with Russia too. It’s time to reject the blood thirsty politics of the Republican Party and end this war obsession. America does not need more war, death, and economic calamity. We need peace and economic stability. And the Republican Party only supports the former.
