Rick Santorum Says Wealthy People Don’t Have To Pay Taxes Because They Are Rich (VIDEO)

The Republican Presidential candidates have made it clear that they are competing for the support of the wealthiest Americans, as if they have the power to appoint one of them to the Presidency. As part of this effort, each candidate has put forward a tax plan that significantly benefits the richest Americans and shifts the tax burden to the middle class and the poor. On Monday, during a campaign stop in Ohio, Rick Santorum upped the ante, telling the crowd that wealthy people don’t have to pay taxes at all, because they are rich.

“Once we defeat Barack Obama this economy will start turning around. Because you’ll know you have someone in there who’s going to unshackle businesses, reduce rates, not increase them. The president’s promised increased taxes if he’s re-elected. All he wants to do to solve the deficit problem is increase taxes on people, particularly higher-income people. You see, that sounds very populist. Go after the 1 percent… Well, higher-income people don’t have to pay taxes if they don’t want to because they can move their money somewhere else, they can move their investments. They can stop investing. They can stop working. They don’t need to work. They’re higher-income people.”

If you ask me, Rick Santorum sounds like the elitist snob that Republicans constantly accuse President Obama of being. Santorum is so arrogant and pompous that he actually believes wealthy people can choose not to pay taxes without consequence just because they have more money than everyone else. America, now more than ever, needs the wealthy to pay higher taxes as part of the solution to deficit reduction. Cutting spending alone will not do it. Rick Santorum and the rest of the Republican Party want to gut the federal government, and slash everything but the oversized military budget so that they can take the country to war with Iran for the oil so that their rich buddies in the oil industry can make huger profits without having to pay any taxes on it. If the GOP has their way, the middle class and the poor will be solely responsible for paying all of the taxes in this country, while the wealthy and corporations get the gift of not paying any taxes at all.

Meanwhile, there won’t be any jobs left in America because the wealthy and corporations will outsource even more jobs to third world countries so they can have slave labor instead of paying living wages to American workers. This way, they can make even more profit. So we’ll be forced to pay more taxes but won’t be able to buy anything because there won’t be any jobs unless some wealthy snob like Rick Santorum or Mitt Romney decides it’s worth paying a poor little kid to shine their shoes for a nickel. The wealthy are unpatriotic Americans who think tax evasion is a privilege they have earned. That is not how America works. The higher taxes that Santorum is talking about is a 1% increase that President Obama has consistently proposed. It’s the tax code of the Clinton years when the American economy was prospering. To the rich, that’s pocket change. That’s what Republicans are whining about. The rich have been receiving tax cuts for over thirty years now and not one job has been created because of it, unless you count jobs in China and other nations. The wealthy don’t even really pay the current 35% tax rate because they take advantage of all the loopholes Republicans have been slipping into the tax code all these years. President Obama has made every effort to cut spending. But spending cuts are just not enough. Revenues need to be part of the equation if America is to get back on track. But Republicans care more about protecting their greedy wealthy friends than they do about the rest of us.
