Mitt Romney has consistently made remarks that reveal a general disconnect between himself and the rest of the American people who aren’t wealthy. This is a man who once said that $300,000 isn’t a lot of money as if it was pocket change. This is a man who has stated that he likes firing people and that he’s not very concerned about the poor. He once had a Swiss bank account, and still has a tax free offshore account in the Caymans. He’s even tried to convince everyone that he has lived in the real streets of America. The problem is that no self respecting average American can identify with what Romney is saying. And now the same can be said of his wife, Ann Romney.
During an appearance on Fox News on Monday, Ann Romney made an attempt to identify with the poor with a statement that you could swear came directly from the mouth of her husband.
“We can be poor in spirit, and I don’t even consider myself wealthy, which is an interesting thing, it can be here today and gone tomorrow.”
Here’s the video via ThinkProgress:
How the hell can you be “poor in spirit?” Does the Romney family gather once a year to sleep in cardboard boxes in the livingroom of their California beach house? Do they fit in a ‘whatever you can find in the garbage’ dinner night into their weekly meal schedule? Mrs. Romney tries to convince us that she doesn’t feel wealthy. I’m sure when she’s driving her two Cadillacs she feels differently. The Romneys are just not good at sympathizing with struggling Americans. This is a family that doesn’t even donate to actual charities that help the poor. Rather than give money to soup kitchens or shelters that are the front line of serving the poor, the Romneys gave $7 million to the Mormon Church. Seriously, how many more times can these people insult our intelligence and our economic standing before we stop voting for them?
Then Ann says that her family’s wealth “can be here today and gone tomorrow.” This particular part of her statement is really infuriating considering that millions of Americans nearly lost everything when the stock market tanked in 2008. While the economic collapse was thrusting more Americans into poverty, the Romneys escaped unscathed. They are worth $250 million and make the equivalent of $57,000 a day which is far more than what most average Americans earn in a single year. If Mitt Romney really wants to see what it’s like for the poor, he should do what Robert F. Kennedy did when he ran for President in 1968 and visit poor neighborhoods and actually spend time with poor people. But I doubt Romney would even consider such a thing. After all, he’s so busy coddling the wealthy and supervising the doubling of his mansion. And besides, it’s likely Romney would come face to face with some of the people that lost their jobs due to the vulture capitalism started by Bain Capital. But Romney knows that the vote of the wealthy won’t get him elected. He needs votes from everyone else too. That’s why he’s trying to identify with the poor. But he’s failing because he has no experience being among the poor and when you try to be something you’re not, it shows. In other words, he can’t just be himself because he wants to be President and needs votes from all of us regular people. The real Romney is actually a wealthy prick who doesn’t actually give a damn about the rest of us, but if he wants to see the Oval Office, he needs to suck up to us, which he can’t do successfully because he is, again, a wealthy prick. There’s a reason why Romney is just popular among those making over $100,000 a year. It’s because he’ll help them get richer at the expense of the poor and the middle class. He hopes we won’t realize that, but we do.
I can’t imagine why anyone in the 99% of America would vote for this guy. He makes millions of dollars doing nothing. It’s not like he is out there breaking a sweat to earn money. He doesn’t even have to think. He made his money putting people out of work and now he let’s other people tend to his investments for him so that he can make even more money without actually doing anything. This is a guy who doesn’t know the value of hard work. And it shows in the way he tries to identify with those who do.

When we are all reduced to being serfs to the 1% and the corporations then she will consider herself wealthy.
