During a Monday broadcast of his program, Rush Limbaugh lashed out against President Obama after the president said ‘if he had a son, he would like Trayvon,’ claiming the president was seizing upon a political opportunity.
“It is the least important thing, what the kid looks like. This poor kid was shot and the President of the United States only public reaction [was] ‘Mind you, if I had a son he’d look like that’? For what purpose does one say that? And what must you be thinking about this situation to think that and then say it?” the conservative radio host said. (Source: Politico)
Indeed, the president showing compassion in the face of a tragic event show be grounds for impeachment. Much like with everything tragic and horrible, it’s the Republicans who are using the Trayvon case for political gain. For example, Newt Gingrich, who apparently is still running for president and apparently want everyone to know that he still has books to hawk, told Sean Hannity “what the president said in a sense is disgraceful. It’s not a question of who that young man looked like.” (Source: Politico).
Again, still not realizing that all the president was trying to do was provide some comfort to a grieving family during a tragic time, Gingrich followed up by saying “Any young American of any ethnic background should be safe period. We should all be horrified no matter what the ethnic background. Is the president suggesting that if it had been a white who had been shot that would be ok because it didn’t look like him?” (Source: Politco)
Limbaugh then hit the president for failing to respond to the New Black Panthers offering a monetary bounty for the capture of Zimmerman.
“Where is the president on this?” he said. “I would think that somebody in authority would try to do something to calm this down. I know the president’s in North Korea, but he could still say something about this and when he doesn’t say anything about it, we’re left to question — why?” (Source: Politico)
It’s safe to assume that the President does not condone such foolish vigilantism, especially considering that it was foolish vigilantism is what caused the tragic killing in the first place. By sending his highest-ranking officials from the Justice Department to meet with the family and to involve themselves with the investigation, it’s pretty clear that the president doesn’t think too much of the New Black Panthers’ bounty.
