Rick Santorum Lies To Wisconsin Crowd, Says University Of California System Doesn’t Teach American History

Since Republicans began the primary race to get the GOP nomination, they’ve told falsehood after falsehood to the American people. From lies about health care, to lies about contraception, to lies about President Obama, and lies about Democrats, the United Nations, jobs, the debt, and several other issues, Republican lies have become the norm. Well, Rick Santorum told another lie to a crowd in Wisconsin today when he said that the University of California system doesn’t teach American history.

“I was just reading something last night from the state of California,” Santorum regaled. “And that the California universities – I think it’s seven or eight of the California system of universities don’t even teach an American history course. It’s not even available to be taught.”

Here’s the video via ThinkProgress:

You have to wonder where Santorum gets his information. Did he read a blog or tabloid? Did he listen to Rush Limbaugh or watch Fox News? Or did he make it up in his own mind? In order to graduate at nine of the ten Universities of California, students must take American History. It’s a core class that nearly every single college student in the country must take. And what about the tenth university? It’s strictly a medical school.

Seriously, if Santorum is going to lie to the people, you’d think he could come up with something that can’t be disproven in seconds by calling a university representative or looking at the course requirements catalog. So what was Santorum thinking? What was the purpose of his ridiculous claim? It’s actually pretty easy. California is a liberal state and by claiming that California universities don’t teach American history, Santorum is trying to add to the conservative narrative that liberals hate America and American history. Instead of lying about who teaches American history, Santorum should focus more on actually learning it. After all, he has certainly distorted it enough.

  • I attend a public university in Kentucky, which is an extreme Red state. We’re not required to take U.S. History to graduate, only Western Civ… Maybe ol’ Frothy Mixture misremembered the wrong state?
