Tuesday night, April 4, Santa Monica City College campus police used excessive and potentially lethal methods to clear protesting students out of a board meeting. Roughly 200 hundred students including several with children were there to voice their objection to a proposed 382% tuition increase. When the students tried to enter the meeting, campus security began spraying in an enclosed, tightly packed area. The results were predictable: the students fled the cloud of pepper spray that and several people were nearly trampled. Had the crowd been larger, their could have easily been severe injuries. A four year old girl was among those affected by the spray, whether she was sprayed directly or caught in the cloud that could not disperse properly indoors is unclear.
Here’s the video:
This is an example of the reckless actions of police and security all over the country as the unnecessary use of pepper spray and excessive force goes completely unpunished. Blinding and choking a crowded hallway is akin to causing a panic in a crowded movie theater. The lack of regard for the safety of the students and the children present is criminal, as is pepper spraying children in the first place.
There are reports that the campus police also used batons to assault the students.
This is a deeply troubling trend that can only end in casualities as the police and security forces are emboldened by the lack of legal retaliation.
