It’s been over three years since Barack Obama was elected President by the American people, and a year since President Obama released his long form birth certificate to silence those who claim that he isn’t an natural born American citizen. The President didn’t have to release his long form certificate. His certificate of live birth had already been authenticated by the Democratic Party and even by some right-wing media outlets. But after President Obama took office in January of 2009, Republicans began a smear campaign to paint him as a foreigner who had illegally seized power. Throughout the next two years, Republicans repeated the claim that President Obama isn’t a real American and continually called for him to release his long form certificate.
After President Obama did just that, he seemed to silence many of the voices of doubt about his status as an American by birth. But now, as the 2012 Election approaches, Republicans are once again challenging the citizenship of the President. During a town hall event, Missouri Rep. Vicky Hartzler expressed doubts about the validity of President Obama’s birth certificate.
“You know, I have a lot of doubts about all that,” Hartzler stated. “But I don’t know, I haven’t seen it. I’m just at the same place you are on that. You read this, you read that. But I don’t understand why he didn’t show that right away. I mean, if someone asked for my birth certificate, I’d get my baby book and hand it out and say ‘Here it is,’ so I don’t know.”

Hartzler is not some right wing blogger or activist. She’s a congresswoman representing the state of Missouri in the US House of Representatives. You would think that she understands the law but it’s clear she does not. No President has ever been asked to hand over their birth certificate, not in the entire history of the United States. It is only now that America has an African American President that anyone dares to question the citizenship of the Commander in Chief. Where were the calls for a birth certificate when George W. Bush was President? Where were the calls for a birth certificate when Ronald Reagan was President? Or any other past President for that matter?
The fact is, these doubts about President Obama’s birth certificate come from Southern white Republicans who clearly carry racist attitudes. Why else would conservatives all of a sudden have concerns about the validity of a President’s birth certificate? The state of Hawaii has already recognized President Obama’s birth, hence the fact that there is a birth certificate. Therefore, there should be no controversy. Every state in America is obligated by law to recognize President Obama’s birth certificate just as they would a certificate issued for anyone else in any other state. What’s more, Congress declared Obama the winner of the 2008 Election even while under pressure from the birthers not to do so. And even Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts didn’t have any problem with Obama’s eligibility since he swore him in. That should be good enough for everyone. Rep. Hartzler should be ashamed of herself for these comments. She is an elected official who holds national office and yet she willingly pushed a racist conspiracy theory that has been debunked time and time again. The House of Representatives is no place for a racist politician who pushes conspiracy theories.
