BREAKING: Rick Santorum Drops Out Of GOP Race (VIDEO)

In an announcement from his home state of Pennsylvania, Rick Santorum, whose Presidential campaign was hanging by a thread, has decided to quit the race. Despite enjoying a short time as the front-runner, Santorum is in a distant second place in the quest for delegates. His chances of winning are almost non-existent and his hopes of winning even his home state are dwindling, with latest polls showing him behind the leading rival, Mitt Romney.

Santorum had just taken some time off from the campaign to attend to his daughter, Bella, who is sick in the hospital. I speculated at that time that he might take that opportunity to quit the campaign altogether.

In Santorum’s press conference, he spoke of Bella. He held back tears as he talked about the people he met along the way. He gave no specific reasons for “suspending” his campaign.

While there was no mention of Romney in Santorum’s speech, the Romney camp says that they received a call from Santorum this morning.

Santorum claimed that there was no negative campaigning, yet the Romney campaign will be haunted with YouTube clips of Santorum holding an Etch-a-Sketch or of his attempts to link Romney with President Barack Obama.

The Romney campaign praised Santorum’s decision.

“Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran,” Romney said. “He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation. We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity.”

Despite the fact that Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul are, for the moment, remaining in the race, barring something completely unforeseen, Romney is now the presumed nominee; and so the general election begins.
