Tennessee Bill Defines Kissing And Holding Hands As Gateways To Sexual Activity, Bans Teaching Contraception In Sex Ed

Tennessee Republicans have gone on a culture war rampage. The Republican controlled legislature has introduced bills that discriminate against homosexuals, a bill that allow the teaching of creationism in science class (which has since become law), and bills that restrict abortion. But now, Republicans are going even further by introducing language in a sex education bill that would define kissing and holding hands as gateways to sexual activity. The bill also bans sex education teachers from promoting contraception.

According to WMC-TV, “Tennessee senators approved an update to the state’s abstinence-based sex education law that includes warnings against “gateway sexual activity.” In a new family life instructions bill, holding hands and kissing could be considered gateways to sex.”

HB 3621 and SB 3310 would also give parents the ability to take legal action against teachers who do encourage the use of contraception to promote safe sex. Such allowances could scare teachers from even mentioning contraception at all, meaning sex education courses would consist of just abstinence-only programs, which are proven to not work in preventing teen pregnancy.

I’m not sure what Republicans have against kissing or hand holding but it’s clear they have completely lost their minds and have nothing but sex in their thoughts. With the exception of creationism, Republicans have focused mostly on bills about sex and our sex lives. At this rate, I wouldn’t be surprised if Republicans next try to actually criminalize hand holding and kissing. After all, according to the GOP, both lead to that evil thing called sex.
