    The United States isn’t a democracy. It’s a representative republic.

    Totally agree that Americans need to travel, and they need to stop pretending they’re Canadians when they do it.

    The US definitely needs to be a better global neighbor. We *can* do it, and most people seem to support this – but the government isn’t listening. Vote out self-absorbed millionaires who refuse to listen to their constituents and elect intelligent, ethical people. That’s a good place to start.

    The reactionary right wing will of course dismiss this article and its author as “libtard” nonsense without so much as thinking about the implications. I have long believed that most of the problem with these super-patriots are that most have never been outside of the U.S., except for maybe the border regions of Mexico and Canada. People who have experienced other societies and people usually have a more liberal attitude towards them. But, there is that word “liberal” which will automatically exclude any consideration of the truth.
