Four days ago, John Boehner threatened to repeat the disastrous 2011 debt showdown that led to a downgrade of the nation’s credit rating last August. Republicans wanted massive cuts to domestic spending, including Medicare, food aid, Medicaid, infrastructure and just about any other program that benefits the poor and middle class. The GOP also demanded tax cuts for the richest Americans and an increase in military spending. The resulting solution created a trigger that would cut both defense spending and Medicare payments while honoring America’s promise to pay its debts. But Boehner wants to hold America hostage again and renege on last year’s debt deal, all in the effort to destroy domestic spending and give the wealthy trillions of dollars in tax breaks.
That’s why Nancy Pelosi issued a challenge to Speaker Boehner on Sunday morning during an interview on ABC, calling on him to pass a measure designed to specifically cut taxes for the middle class instead of holding the middle class hostage in the Republican effort to keep the Bush Tax Cuts in place for millionaires and billionaires.
“I challenge the Speaker right now to bring the middle-income tax cuts to the floor,” Pelosi said. “Bringing middle-income tax cuts to floor now, passing those would help our economic recovery, would be a clear signal that the upper-end tax cuts for the wealthy will expire because middle-income tax cuts would not be held hostage to those. Last year, the threat of not lifting the debt ceiling caused our credit rating to be lowered. This is not a responsible, mature, sensible place for us to go. We all know we have to reduce the deficit. We have to do it in a balanced way. The Speaker wants to go over the edge.”
Here’s the video:
Pelosi is absolutely correct. Republicans are wrong to hold the majority of the American people hostage so that the wealthy can get even richer through more tax cuts. If Boehner and Republicans really care about the middle class, they’ll bring middle class tax cuts to the floor and pass it unanimously. But it’s highly doubtful Republicans will do that. The GOP cares more about giving more money to the wealthy than they do about actually helping the other 98% of the American people. But it is nice to see Nancy Pelosi call out the current Speaker of the House for his threat to irresponsibly put America in peril on behalf of the wealthy.
