One Millions Moms (who are more like a ‘Handful of Religious Housewives’), the ultra-conservative pressure group that waged a totally worthless fatwa against retailer JC Penney over the clothing company’s unmitigated audacity to provide ‘Ellen’ fans with affordable socks, and selecting the totally harmless homosexual talk show host to be its spokesperson, just can’t seem to get the better of JC Penney. So in what appears to be a delightful “FU” to the ineffective Million Moms, JC Penney has recognized that if it wished to remain relevant in an ever-changing social landscape, it’s going to have to attract the LGBT community. Evidently, gay people like to wear clothes too. So, the company recently released an ad featuring two same-sex dads for its Fathers’ Day Ad.
According to JC Penney, the two men who appear in the ad are “real-life dads Todd Koch and Cooper Smith,” and the jovial children are their kids, Claire and Mason.
“First Pals: What makes Dad so cool?” reads the ad’s copy. “He’s the swim coach, tent maker, best friend, bike fixer and hug giver – all rolled into one. Or two.” (Gawker)
With the retail company facing an uncertain financial future and nearing bankruptcy, some may see this ad as a cynical attempt to exploit an increasingly marketable social lifestyle, so as to fill its coffers before going belly up. Irrespective of the company’s motivations behind the ad, it’s quite refreshing to see that the company refuses to bow to the misguided, outdated hatred of a handful of religious housewives in the Million Moms.
