Conservatives like to talk about “personal responsibility” but have made an art form out of dodging it. For instance, conservatives voted for George W. Bush. Twice! They were thrilled when they had liberals cowed after 9/11. Anyone who dared to question the king president “during a time of war” was instantly labeled a unamerican traitor. It was like McCarthyism on steroids and they loved it. Bush was their man! He was a tough wartime president that you could have a beer with! Conservatives were Republicans and they were proud of it!
And then the economy collapsed under his stewardship.
Suddenly, Bush wasn’t a “real” conservative and no one was a Republican. They were “true” conservatives or Tea Partiers. So much for personal responsibility.
So here we are, just three years after the worst economic downturn in almost a century after thirty years of conservative economic policies (and let’s not rewrite history, Clinton passed NAFTA and repealed Glass-Steagall at the behest of the GOP) and now it’s Obama’s fault for, what, not cleaning up the right’s mess fast enough? Even more laughable, these same “real” conservatives want to go right back to the exact same policies that blew up the economy. Maybe if they get their wish, they can blame the resulting depression on the next Democratic president.
But hey, conservatives are easily confused when it comes to giving credit. Obama gave the order to invade an ally’s air space and launch an assault on bin Laden. Just like he said he would during his campaign. Remember, the right was quite derisive of this. But now, he’s not allowed to take credit for it? We already know he would have taken the blame had it failed. How? The right took great pleasure in attacking Jimmy Carter for the failure of the mission to rescue the hostages from Iran so there is a solid historical precedent.
But really, we shouldn’t have even bothered going after bin Laden in the first place. He only ordered the attack, he wasn’t on any the planes himself. Therefor, still following the childish logic of the right, bin Laden can take no credit at all the attacks on 9/11. I wouldn’t bother trying to explain that to a conservative though, it will only make their head hurt. Logic is not their forte. Why do you think they have such a tough time understanding “Liberal Logic?”

Thanks for nothing Dubya, We’ll send you the bill…
NAFTA was originally signed by George Herbert Walker Bush in 1992. Yes we can blame Clinton for not blocking a Republican policy, but don’t call it “his” policy. If we didn’t have Republicans, we wouldn’t have NAFTA.
Justin:

Go back to “School House Rock”.
The GOP controlled House and Senate passed NAFTA and repealed Glass-Steagall. Clinton DID sign them. On NAFTA, he did agree. On Gramm-Rudman, which replaced Glass-Steagall, he had no call.
