As Americans, I think we often forget that our original European settlers were Puritans. Sometimes I doubt we’ve advanced that much, which probably explains the squeamishness that many Americans have toward gay people.

That squeamishness was amplified by the media reaction to a scripted joke that just sort of came out wrong. In a speech before a LGBT gala, President Obama joked about the fact that Michelle was able to do more pushups than Ellen DeGeneres.
“I want to thank my wonderful friend, who accepts a little bit of teasing about Michelle beating her in pushups. But I think she claims Michelle didn’t go all the way down. That’s what I heard. (did I detect a little glint in his eye?) I want to set the record straight, Michelle outdoes me in pushups as well.”
Here’s the video:
First off, that joke is funny. Perhaps even more funny is the embarrassment he felt after telling the joke. What’s appalling is that people are calling it a gaffe. Sometimes, as Bill Clinton might say, a cigar is just a cigar. As sexy as sex is, it is even more consistently funny. Nearly everyone, including, I’d imagine, cable news pundits have been known to get a laugh or two from talking about sex. Now, let’s stop pretending we’re shocked.
