BREAKING: Two Female State Reps Banned From Speaking On House Floor After Comments On Late Term Abortions

Author: June 14, 2012 1:31 pm

Michigan State Representatives Lisa Brown (D-West Bloomfield) and Barb Byrum (D-Onondaga) were banned from speaking on the House floor yesterday by Majority Floor Leader, Jim Stamas (R- Midland), after only Brown was permitted to speak to the Michigan House Of Representatives against a bill that puts new restrictions on abortion providers.  Byrum wanted to speak but was not given the opportunity.

Here’s the video:

Brown posted on her Facebook page and tweeted this morning “House Republicans continue to silence the voice of women. I have been banned from speaking on the House floor as punishment for my comments yesterday…

Byrum tweeted: “I have been banned from speaking on the House floor, I can only assume it’s because I did this yesterday.” She includes a link to the Youtube video.

On the issue of late term abortions, Brown argues that her faith has a different set of rules than Christianity.

Wherever there is a question of the life of the mother or that of the unborn child, Jewish law rules in favor of preserving the life of the mother. The status of the fetus of human life does not equal that of the mother.

I have not asked you to adopt and adhere to my religious beliefs. Why are you asking me to adopt yours?

And finally,  Mr. Speaker, I’m flattered that you’re all so interested in my vagina, but no means no.”

Brown and Byrun just issued this press release that reads in part:

Both Representative Byrum and I were gaveled down without cause yesterday while voicing our opposition to the Republican’s war on women here in Michigan, “said Rep. Brown. “Regardless of their reasoning, this is a violation of my First Amendment rights and directly impedes my ability to serve the people who elected me into office. I was either banned for being Jewish and rightfully pointing out that House Bill 5711 was forcing contradictory religious beliefs upon me and any other religion. Or it is because I said the word ‘vagina’ which is an anatomically, medically correct term. If they are going to legislate my anatomy, I see no reason why I cannot mention it.”

What is happening to women in this country is an outrage. Republicans simply do not care about the law, the truth or anything that may impede their chances of turning America into a fascist nation where women become second-class citizens. They are steamrolling over our rights. Women are angry. We’re not going to lie down and accept this abuse!

  • Romney to female voters: “The GOP has your back.”

Meanwhile, Republican Senators vote against anti-domestic violence legislation,
… the governor of Wisconsin repeals “equal pay for women” legislation,
… conservative pundits and politicians claim that men deserve higher pay for equal work because “men need the added income more than do women” or because “men know more stuff than do women”,
… Congressional and state Republican legislators strive to make affordable access to contraception and breast cancer screenings more difficult with their assault on PP and health insurance coverage,
… female state legislators are shunned and silenced for uttering the word “vagina” (gasp) during an abortion debate,
… and GOP-controlled state legislatures mandate that women seeking an abortion provide social conservative politicians with “a womb with a view”.
So much for the tea party/conservative movement’s mantra: “small, non-intrusive government”.

The 2012 GOP campaign slogan: A chicken in every pot and a spy-cam in every uterus.

American women to Republican Party: “WE will decide whether or not our rights are being assaulted by conservative policies, thank you very much.”

  • This is a common pattern occurring in GOP-controlled state legislatures across the nation — dissenting opinions and alternative points of view are not welcome.

  • Ooh! Ooh! She mentioned her woo-woo! Cover the ears! Cover the eyes! Stone her! ;)
