AM radio hatemonger Bryan Fischer has declared that the current anti-gay policy of the Boy Scouts of America is protecting children and that, without it, the BSA will be destroyed. Why? Because homosexuals are more likely to be pedophiles and they will prey upon the scouts in their charge. Just like Jerry Sandusky from Penn State. Here’s the video:

Utter horseshit, of course.

Recently, the BSA announced that they would be reviewing their current (and 100% legal if not moral) policy of not allowing openly gay men or women to serve as scoutmasters. Some claim that this is due to pressure from outside groups while the BSA says it is an internal decision not influenced by petitions. Either way, the fact that the BSA is even debating a change is progress. Considering that the values the BSA claims to stand for run directly contrary to institutionalized discrimination, it’s about time.

But back to Fischer’s claim of homosexuality and pedophilia going hand in hand (so to speak). Fischer is deliberately misinterpreting a pedophile that prefers boys with homosexuality. I say “deliberately” because 30 seconds of research into the topic reveals that the sexual orientation of a pedophile has little to no bearing on what kind of child they are attracted to. Also, it absolutely has no bearing on whether they become a pedophile in the first place. To put it more plainly, a pedophile that is attracted to male children is not more likely to be a homosexual in their adult relations. The percentage of male pedophiles that are also homosexuals is roughly the same as the non-pedophile population. There is no link between the two. Further, there have been no documented cases of lesbian parents abusing their children. A glaring statistic that is often (always) ignored by the gay bashing right.

I find it hard to believe that not a shred of this research has penetrated Fischer shell of hatred and bigotry so it’s not like he doesn’t know better. Rather, the real problem for Fischer and others like him is that every organization that abandons its discriminatory policies equals more acceptance among the general population. For people who traffic in hate, acceptance is anathema and represents a weakening of their power base.

History will not be kind to the religious right in this country.
