Host Jan Mickelson of the show, Mickelson in the Morning, doesn’t like the fact that nuns are protesting the Paul Ryan budget with a bus tour. The church is complaining that the nuns are going against church teachings, which I guess only includes being anti-birth control and anti-choice. The nuns insist that they read other parts of the Bible, the parts with Jesus, I guess.
“These are Catholic social teachings which we’ve had for decades,” he said. “What they’re trying to highlight both to communities as well as legislators is what our Catholic social teachers are, and they are about not only charity work but asking the tough questions. Why are these people homeless? Why are they in shelters? Why are they on food stamps? Part of our social justice teaching is asking questions about justice.”
Mickelson is pretty much in agreement with the Vatican. On Friday’s show with Rep. Tom Latham (R-IA), he joked that he wanted the nuns pistol whipped.
MICKELSON: There’s a bus full of nuns headed towards Washington to lobby against the Ryan plan. Do you guys, do you have any power to pull the Nuns on the Bus over and pistol whip them?
LATHAM: It’s always fun to be on your show [Laughs]
He also claimed the nuns “threw the first punch” at Paul Ryan. Here’s the audio:
I’m beginning to think that Republicans should be handed a handlebar mustache and top hat when they register to vote. On the bright side, who needs satire when all you need to do is listen to right-wing radio?
