Washington DC GOP Includes LGBT Equality In Party Platform
LGBT equality is not supported by the great majority of Republicans. In fact, state GOP platforms are hell-bent on denouncing equality for gay and lesbian Americans. Mitt Romney himself has promised that if he is elected President, he will support a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage. Any Republican who dares to support rights for LGBT people are certain to be viewed as ‘un-American’ and ‘Republicans in name only.’ But one Republican Party platform has taken up that dare and has included a plank in support of LGBT equality.
The Republican Party of Washington DC has endorsed LGBT equality as part of its 2012 party platform, becoming the first GOP platform to embrace the gay and lesbian community.
According to the Washington Blade the platform reads:
“We, the Republicans of the District of Columbia support the belief that all individuals, without regard to sexual orientation, are entitled to full and equal protection under the laws and the Constitution and that everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect.”
Not only did the platform include the above language, it included it under the section titled ‘Family and Marriage,’ which is sure to infuriate anti-gay conservatives and right-wing groups such as the hate groups American Family Association and Family Research Council, both of which have been vehemently against same-sex marriage and adoption by gay parents. Anti-gay conservatives have been crusading for years to deny LGBT people equality, justice, and rights, and actively calling for making discrimination against gay people legal.
But at least one Republican Party platform now dares to stand against hatred and bring that stand to the national GOP convention Tampa Bay, Florida later this year. For years, Republicans have said time and time again that government has no business legislating our personal lives. At long last, a group of Republicans is actually practicing what the party preaches.
