Tammy Duckworth is a decorated helicopter pilot who has served in the military for over 20 years. She holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and has received many military awards and honors, including a Purple Heart that she received upon losing both of her legs in combat because an enemy RPG brought down the chopper she was flying in Iraq. She’s a genuine hero and a fine example of what women can do in the service of their country. But Joe Walsh doesn’t think she’s a real hero at all.
During a town hall event in Elk Grove, Illinois, the deadbeat dad, who owed over $100,000 in child support and has never served in the military himself, trashed Duckworth’s service to this country in an effort to smear her campaign against him for his seat in Congress. After comparing Duckworth to John McCain, Walsh told the crowd that she isn’t a “true hero.”
“Understand something about John McCain,” Walsh began. “His political advisers, day after day, had to take him and almost throw him against a wall and hit him against the head and say, “Senator, you have to let people know you served! You have to talk about what you did!” He didn’t want to do it, wouldn’t do it. Day after day they had to convince him. Finally, he talked a little bit about it, but it was very uncomfortable for him. That’s what’s so noble about our heroes. Now I’m running against a woman who, my God, that’s all she talks about. Our true heroes, it’s the last thing in the world they talk about. That’s why we’re so indebted and in awe of what they’ve done.”

Here’s the thing about combat veterans, each and every one them is different. Some don’t talk about their service because it’s too painful to relive the memories. Then there are some who do talk about it later in life, which was the case with my own grandfather. He was a World War II veteran who never talked about his service with anyone until I asked him about it. He was in his eighties at the time and even more than 60 years after the war ended, he still had a hard time speaking about it. Then there are those combat veterans who speak freely about their service. It’s still painful but they do it anyway because most Americans don’t really understand what soldiers go through in war and the only way for us to understand, other than serving in combat ourselves, is to listen to combat veterans describe their experiences. That is what Duckworth is doing when she opens up about her service. She is trying to make others understand. Talking about her service doesn’t make her any less of a hero. She served, she saw horrific things, went through horrific things, and she should be honored for that. She is a role model for women and girls across the country and has served her country more nobly than Joe Walsh has done by being in Congress. Ever since he became a member of Congress in 2010, Walsh has done nothing but whine and complain and try to tear people down. He whines about the debt all the while neglecting to help pay for taking care of his own kid. Now he’s trying to tear down a decorated military veteran because he knows that he’ll lose his seat to her in November. He doesn’t want Duckworth to talk about her military service because it’s a threat to him. He didn’t risk life and limb for his country like Duckworth did. As a Republican, you would think that Walsh would be proud of Duckworth, but when a military veteran actually challenges a Republican in the political arena, the patriotism and pride Republicans claim to have for our veterans disappears.
