Right wing religious fanatic Billy Graham has declared that America is a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah that deserves its destruction by a wrathful God:
Some years ago, my wife, Ruth, was reading the draft of a book I was writing. When she finished a section describing the terrible downward spiral of our nation’s moral standards and the idolatry of worshiping false gods such as technology and sex, she startled me by exclaiming, “If God doesn’t punish America, He’ll have to apologize to Sodom and Gomorrah.”
I wonder what Ruth would think of America if she were alive today. In the years since she made that remark, millions of babies have been aborted and our nation seems largely unconcerned. Self-centered indulgence, pride, and a lack of shame over sin are now emblems of the American lifestyle.
So not only is America worse than the biblical cities filled with all manner of sinners but if we don’t suffer the same fate than God should apologize for not destroying us? It’s interesting that liberals are often (always) accused of hating America and hoping for its destruction but when the Religious Right call for it, it is “patriotism” somehow.
An interesting idea for a man who claims a moral authority higher than the rest of us. As he rails about babies being aborted, it begs to question how many pregnant women and how many newborns and how many innocent children burned in those two mythical cities? What was the morality in that action? Right, I forgot, conservative religious morality is as fluid as quicksilver.
Really though, this is just another scam to part the stupid and fearful from their money:
P.S. – We have many invitations and opportunities to carry out so many kinds of outreach, but we just don’t have the finances to do them all. We need the help of friends like you. Your gift this month—and just as important, your prayers—is an investment that will show results for all eternity.
Every time one of these pious monsters gleefully celebrates the death of American citizens due to hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes we hear nothing from conservatives who would tear a liberal to pieces for suggesting that American policies in the Middle East led to the anger and resentment that brought about 9/11. That’s treason and un-American, apparently, but applauding cities being leveled and then using it to fund raise is “speaking for God.” There is something diseased about these people and their influence on policymakers is tantamount to a national disaster all on its own.
