Mitt Romney is currently on a “world tour” consisting of visits to three nations, and his trip has started off disastrously. Romney has been visiting England, the first stop on his itinerary, and let’s just say that Mitt is not only embarrassing himself, he is embarrassing the United States.
As a potential American president, you would think Mitt Romney would be sure to avoid diplomatic gaffes that anger our closest ally, but Romney failed in perhaps the biggest way possible.
During an interview with Brian Williams regarding the Olympic Games and security, Romney questioned England’s readiness and its commitment to the Games, prompting a major outcry across the United Kingdom that has included rebukes of Romney from everyone from a mayor, to the Prime Minister, to the media.
“It’s hard to know just how well it will turn out,” Romney said about the London Olympics. “There are a few things that were disconcerting. The stories about the private security firm not having enough people, the supposed strike of the immigration and customs officials — that obviously is not something which is encouraging.”
If it wasn’t embarrassing enough to criticize England during what is supposed to demonstrate the “special relationship” between America and the UK, Romney then went on to question the commitment of the English people.
“Do they come together and celebrate the Olympic moment? That’s something which we only find out once the Games actually begin.”

Romney’s terrible diplomatic skills led to backlash from Prime Minister David Cameron, who during a press conference, shot back at the former Massachusetts Governor’s lack of manners and international etiquette.
“You’re going to see beyond doubt that Britain can deliver. We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world. Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere… I think we will show the whole world not just that we come together as a United Kingdom but also we’re extremely good at welcoming people from across the world. I will obviously make those points to Mitt Romney. I look forward to meeting him.”
London Mayor Boris Johnson also had some words for Mitt Romney, telling a crowd of tens of thousands:
”I’ve never seen anything like this in all my life. … people are coming from around the world and they are seeing us and they are seeing the greatest city on earth. And there are some people who are coming from around the world who don’t yet know about all the preparations we’ve done to get London ready in the last seven years. I hear there’s a guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know whether we’re ready. He wants to know whether we’re ready. Are we ready? Yes we are!”
Here’s the video of that response:
Apparently, Romney’s first trip abroad as the presumptive Republican Presidential nominee is in shambles at the moment. It’s a failure of Romney to represent himself, and a failure to represent America. At this point, that “special relationship” with England that Romney claims President Obama has destroyed has actually really been destroyed by Mitt Romney himself. America cannot afford to elect a man into office who can’t even get through a visit to our closest ally without insulting and angering them.
