Father Disowns Son For Being Gay In Heartbreaking Letter (IMAGE)

When conservatives insist that they have the right to abuse and discriminate against the LGBT community, they do so under the guise of “religious freedom.” They claim that it’s no one’s business if they spew their hatred. That no one is hurt by their rhetoric.

But they’re wrong.

By constantly reinforcing the (false) message that homosexuality is some kind of preversion instead of simply being a natural part of the human condition, they make it OK for a father to do this to his son:

James, who goes by the Reddit handle RegBarc (an awesome Star Trek reference) posted this entry with the note:

In August of 2007, I finally built up the courage to tell my father I was gay. The moment I said it, the phone got quiet and he got off the phone after a few “Okay”s. I decided to give him time to process the news. About a week later, and not long before my birthday, I received the following letter:

“James: This is a difficult but necessary letter to write. I hope your telephone call was not to receive my blessing for the degrading of your lifestyle. I have fond memories of our times together, but that is all in the past. Don’t expect any further conversations With me. No communications at all. I will not come to visit, nor do I want you in my house. You’ve made your choice though Wrong it may be. God did not intend for this unnatural lifestyle. If you choose not to attend my funeral, my friends and family will understand. Have a good birthday and good life. No present exchanges will be accepted. Goodbye, Dad.”

It’s important to know just what this zealotry from Bryan Fisher, Maggie Gallagher, Dan Cathy, et al., does to everyday people. I’ve never done drugs, was an excellent student, an obedient child (far less trouble than many of my classmates), didn’t drink until I was 22 because it terrified me, and have had just 1 speeding ticket in my life. Yet I am still seemingly deserving of this terrible act of hate and cowardice that one person can place on another. 5 years on and I am still doing fine, though this letter saunters into my mind every once in a while. When it does, I say without hesitation: Fuck you, Dad.

Words have power. We know this. The right knows this, too or they wouldn’t scream about how it’s their First Amendment right to use those words to hurt others. We, as a civilized society, have chosen, to make those who would spread hate pay a penalty for that hatred. There’s a reason the word “nigger” is no longer openly thrown about by right wing bigots on their AM hate radio. Why no politician or commentator can get away with railing against those “dirty Jews.” They still have the right to do so and we have the right to make them pay for it in the form of boycotts and protests. Guess who won?

Words hurt and the longer the right makes it acceptable to hate just to hate, the more “Jameses” will be abandoned by their fathers because it’s socially and morally tolerable. Teenagers who see their community lining up at Chick-fil-A in support take away the message that they are loathed by their friends and neighbors. Children who hear their parents denigrate homosexuals will think it’s OK to bully gay kids, sometimes until they commit suicide to escape the pain.

It’s time to put these savages in their place and let them know they have no place in our society until they can keep their unjustified hate to themselves.
