Not all cell phone cameras are created equal

Because tolerance and open-mindedness is rampant in Utah (I kid), it really shouldn’t be terribly surprising to find something like this in Provo:

Apparently, someone thought it would be funny to reprogram a construction sign with a little message from the religious right. Ho-ho. Very funny. Ha-ha. It is to laugh. Remember, this is Utah, home of the Church of Latter Day Saints aka Mormons, the same people who spent millions in California to make same-sex marriage illegal.

HuffPo reports:

…spokeswoman Leigh Dethman spoke with HuffPost, and said that the message board had been reprogramed [sic] by an unknown person on Tuesday night. A mechanism that covers the message board’s computer was left unsecured, allowing access “for anyone to manipulate it.”

“I don’t know what the motivation was but [the person] would have had to physically walk up to the sign in order to change the message,” Dethman said, adding that there was no way the signs could have been tampered with remotely.

Imagine if someone had programmed it to say “Allah Hates Christians?” There would be a national freak out by the right. But this? Just a funny joke! Why so serious? Who cares if it perpetuates an atmosphere of bigotry in which teenagers kill themselves to escape bullying? It’s OK to hate gays because the Bible says so and telling them to stop tormenting those sinners is attacking their religion!

Being tolerant does not mean we should tolerate the intolerance of others. Free speech doesn’t mean we have to put up with hate. We have every right to drown it out and treat it as unfit for a civilized society. The only way to end discrimination is to unflinchingly face it, condemn it and shame its practitioners out of the public square. This is how we progress as a nation.
