Jon Huntsman Sr. Calls For Romney Tax Release

Greg Sargent of The Washington Post talked to Jon Huntsman Sr. today about the tax scandals surrounding the Republican nominee. Huntsman Sr., the father of Jon Huntsman (Romney beat him in the GOP primary), while vehemently denying that he is Henry Reid’s source for the allegations saying Romney didn’t pay taxes for ten years, did state that he feels that he should release his tax forms. This is notable because of Huntsman’s long-standing support of the candidate extending back to Romney’s presidential campaign in 2008, as well as being the most influential Republican to say so as of yet.

“Mr. Romney ought to square with the American people and release his taxes like any other candidate. I’ve supported Mitt all along. I wish him well. But I do think he should release his income taxes,” he said. When asked about speculation surrounding whether he was Reid’s source or not, he said, ““That’s absolutely false. I have absolutely no knowledge of Bain or Mitt Romney’s tax returns.”

A friend of George Romney, Mitt Romney’s father who also incidentally started the tradition of releasing tax returns when running for president, Huntsman also said, “I loved George. He always said, pay [release] your taxes for at least 10 or 12 years.”

In fact, all recent presidents have done so, making Mitt Romney’s claim of “precedence” absolute nonsense.

“I feel very badly that Mitt won’t release his taxes and won’t be fair with the American people,” Huntsman is reported to have said.
