Who just humiliated Mitt Romney on national TV? This guy!
Well THAT was unexpected. John Kerry, former Democratic presidential nominee, went through his 2004 campaign dogged by accusations of flip flopping and elitism. He presented himself as a stiff and sometimes awkward candidate and narrowly lost to George W. Bush whom, Kerry warned, would lead us to international disaster.
Tonight, we saw the real John Kerry and, boy, did he have an axe to grind! In a speech lasting about 12 minutes, John Kerry Unchained tore into Mitt Romney’s pretensions to foreign policy experience with a ferocity that even this highly energized and committed Democratic National Convention hasn’t put on display. He was comfortable, determined and the tongue lashing came quite naturally. Where was this guy eight years ago?
In a rapid succession of vicious, highly quotable and absolutely true (the hallmark of a good liberal speech) one liners and zingers, Kerry laid bare the fact that Romney is a one of the all-time lightweights in foreign policy, an area we can ill afford to neglect and abuse the way we did under Bush and his neocon handlers. Kerry describe the Romney ticket as, “the most inexperienced foreign policy twosome to run for president and vice president in decades.” That was possibly the nicest thing Kerry had to say about the GOP during his time on stage.
Here’s a few of the lines you will be seeing a lot of for the next couple of months:
On Romney’s obvious reliance on Bush’s gaggle of neo con “experts”: “This is not the time to outsource the job of Commander in Chief.”
“The only thing exception about today’s Republicans is that, almost without exception, they oppose everything that has made America exceptional in the first place.”
“Ask Osama bin Laden if he’s better off than he was four years ago!”
“It isn’t fair to say Mitt Romney doesn’t have a postion on Afghanistan; He has EVERY position!”
On Romney’s…confusion over the Libyan intervention: “Mr. Romney, here’s a little advice: Before you debate Barack Obama on foreign policy, you’d better finish the debate with yourself!”
On Romney’s European disaster tour “It wasn’t a goodwill mission, it was a blooper reel!”
On Romney’s repeated declaration that Russia is our number one geopolitical foe: “Folks, Sarah Palin said she can Russia from Alsaka, Mitt Romney talks like he’s only seen Russia by watching Rocky IV!”
It’s almost tempting to ask if Bill Maher wrote his speech for him. Even MSNBC’s Rahel Maddow seemed slightly stunned at the thunderous applause and Ed Schultz made the claim, “The best speech John Kerry has ever given. Exclamation point.”
