A spokesperson today announced that the former Senator from South Dakota and one-time presidential nominee George McGovern has been admitted to hospice. He was admitted to a hospital in Florida back in April this year after a fall.
The news came from Lindsey Meyers, spokeswoman for the Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center.
The one-time candidate was a strong supporter of civil rights and encouraged women, LGBT, and minority participation in government. His campaign against Richard Nixon was foiled due to dirty tricks: the same kind of dirty tricks which eventually undid President Nixon’s administration, with Nixon resigning in disgrace less than two years after winning re-election in 1972. One oftentimes wonders how the world would have been different with the pro-peace, pro-liberty McGovern as President.
